For those of you who don't want your Garmin mounted on the dash or the windshield, here's a cheap way to make a custom Garmin mount for your 2nd gen taco. I made this mount two years ago and it works great for my needs.

    Total cost ~ $10

    Items needed:

    Arlon APGN-VSM mount adapter plate.
    http://www.amazon.com/APGN-VSM-Vehi...FY/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1324147577&sr=8-20

3M double sided mounting tape (the red stuff)

    (1) 6"L x 1 1/2"W Aluminum stock (~ $3 at Lowes)

    Hacksaw

    Drill and drill bit

    -Remove the HVAC controller.
-Make a mark 1 7/8" from the edge of the aluminum.
-Clamp the aluminum in your vise at that mark.
    -Bend the aluminum to 90°.
    -
Remove from the vise and measure 2 1/2" from the bend and cut the excess off with a hacksaw.
-You should be left with a 90° piece of aluminum that is 1 7/8" long on one side and 2 1/2" long on the other.
-Hold the adapter plate on the side of the aluminum that is 2 1/2" long and mark for the two holes.
-Drill the two holes marked and mount the adapter to the aluminum using the supplied nuts and bolts.
-Cut a few strips of 3M mounting tape and stick it the 1 7/8" piece of aluminum.
-Stick the mount to the location shown in the pick, snap the HVAC controller back in place and you're done.
-Took me about 15 minutes to make and has lasted me for 2 years.

Nice set up. I ended up using the i.trek Nuvi Sticky Mount to the plastic piece right under AC vent and above where yours is.

Just finished doing a very similar setup to the OP for my handheld Garmin. Thanks for the idea!

Fabbed a mounting plate out of flat aluminum stock-

Notched the edge of my Scosche bezel (with a utility knife) for clearance-

3M double-stickied (best invention since duct tape) the end of the bracket to the backside of the bezel (yes, I'm aware how dirty my truck is right now)-

    Used the Garmin marine mount-

    Ready to rock and roll-
