my truck (2007) was a highway girl for 85,000 miles with the previous owner. he had the front diff replaced at some point, but the 20,000 ive put on it has been problem free. it's seen mud and ive used the 4x4 plenty of times but nothing hard core. it's pretty much stock so, yeah.

yeah from personal history i will never buy a newer model vehicle in its first year. not that there is anything "wrong" with the 05's, just making the statement.

So based on this wiki data and what the forum responses are saying due to: safety upgrades, the truck being assembled in TX vs Mexico, back up camera, and "getting kinks worked out" it looks like I should be looking at 2009-2011.

This makes sense to me, and I'll probably find more options with less than 50k+ miles.

Anyone else agree with this thinking? Again, I don't mean to offend any pre-2009 owners just trying to make a good call....

Yep, 2009 and up is going to be more trouble free. But depending on your price range, I wouldn't be scared of an earlier truck. Probably would stay away from the 2005s, and I wouldn't buy a six speed again. Unless you beat the ever loving hell out of it, the earlier trucks will hold up fine.

the general advice i have always received, and always given, is buy the best model you can afford. this may mean the "latest" model year, or the one with the features and options that best suit your needs and wants. this doesn't mean if you "have" 20 grand to spend, that you go ahead and just spend it because you have it.

i could have bought a ten year old tacoma with 150K on it, and i'm sure it would have served my purposes just fine. but even with a reliable vehicle, you are somewhat dependent on how the prior owner(s) looked after it. i looked at '09's and '10s also, but they were so close in price to "new" that it didn't make much sense to me. so i bought a leftover '11 model when the '12's came out, got a great discount (about $5K off sticker) and drove off the lot with a "new to me" truck. i could not be happier. i also bought my wife's suburban the exact same way.

i have had pretty good success buying vehicles very late in the model year. i have even done it with snowmobiles (bought 2 of them that were 2 years old but "new in the box"). once i bought a leftover '04 land rover. i drove it for a little over a year, and traded it in on my jeep. the dealer gave me $1000 less than i paid for it.

good luck with your decision. i think no matter what model you choose, you really can't go wrong with the tacoma.
