no one thinks having a dog outside is per se cruel, it's keeping the dog outside in subfreezing temperatures which makes little or no sense to alot of people. maybe if you DID have a winter with subfreezing temps, you'd think otherwise. if it was summer all year round my dog would never come in the house either. geez.

LOL You are in North Carolina! I've had many happy dogs outside all winter in wisconsin over the years. I usually used a carpet sample flap hanging over the door cut vertically and over-lapped so the pooch could get in and out - if that makes sense...

Then a nice cozy doggie bed in there and they are all set - the bigger the house, the colder the dog will be. You could also use Something like this, but mine was carpet samples....

Also, the house I made them had some insulation and 2x4 walls. I suppose if you had to use the thin plastic house, you could lay a bunch of blankets over it, and weigh them down with something to give it some insulation on the outside, then put a tarp over the top...

there was a wall just inside the entrace that went 3/4ths the way across the house (leave enough room for the pup to fit) he would put shavings in the front area to "clean" off the paws, and the back part where the bed was have hay then a bed or blankets on top so they could make a "nest" the half wall acted like a door stopping the wind from comming in the back part of the house

the roof also lifted on one side, so you could clean it and change out the hay, where the doggy "door" is on the front leave a piece of wood they have to step over to keep the shavings in so they dont get knocked out.

That's the same layout we used on our dog houses except we fixed the roof and put double plexi glass on the wall where the bed was. The hinged roof would have been nice to clean out the old hay...

That dog house is awesome. I have been talking to my grandfather about building him a nice one with me. I get two benefits from this. A nice dog house for the dog. And quality time with my grandfather that I will look back on in many years and appreciate even more than now
