I have a Leer cap that I want to put some racks on, does anyone know what parts I will need to make it work? I get a great deal on Thule stuff so thats what i will be using.

I'm not sure model numbers etc. but LEER's can be ordered with Thule rails on them. I'm sure if you checked their site you may be able to figure out exactly what style/model they are. And being with familiar with Thule and the deals it sounds like you get you'll be ahead of most of us.

I just bought my LEER this summer, I ordered the Thule rails on mine (no towers/bars though yet). They wanted $500 for rails, towers and bars. I talked them down and paid $125 just for the rails installed.

I have the Leer with the preinstalled Thule rack. My understanding is that the preinstalled rack is also reinforced. You may need to reinforce the shell depending on how heavy of loads you will be putting on the racks.

I think it is only the Leer commercial versions that have the reinforced roof .

The main advantage to having the rack factory installed is that it is then covered under the warranty against leaks .

as bamma said,i think they reinforce the roof when adding a rack from the factory.just throwing one up there might not be a good idea.

One of the main upgrades when going to the commercial versions is the fact that you get the reinforced roof

My point being , you can get a thule rack , factory mounted , but this doesn't mean you are getting a reinforced roof .

For example , you can get the Leer 100R with a rack .

The commercial version is the Leer 100RCC , and comes with a reinforced roof to carry the commercial contractor rack

I have a set of these Thule tracks that are made to be installed on fiberglass tops. I have a shortbed and will have to cut them down by a foot. They seem well made and come with detailed instructions and a big sack of stainless hardware. I can't wait to put them on...my next mod for sure.

I called Snugtop to ask about drilling into the top - they told me to be sure to drill into the thicker, honeycomb part. They did not make it seem like a big deal. I can't imagine there is a huge difference in drilling your Leer.

A buddy in construction recommended sealing the holes with Sikaflex - a polyurethane sealant that is way tougher than the silicone that comes with the kit.

    This sounds right.

A standard LEER top (like my 100R) will hold some weight but not meant for big loads. IIRC when I was shopping I thought I seen the RCC that OZ has will do 400lbs or so.

The leak coverage is why I went factory installed also.

I think most regular caps handle about 150lbs.

I am cheap and plan on installing mine. Properly drilled and sealed holes won't leak. It is nerve racking to start drilling into a sweet cap, however.

Either way - good luck OP.

    No, there is another one.
    Snug Top "Sportsman" option.

I have one and the roof is about 1-1/4" thick. I can't recall its load bearing rating.
I haven't put any weight up there yet, but it's nice to be able to run screws into it (for various goodies) without penetrating through the top skin

When I bought my LEER, they asked me if I wanted to add a reinforcement to it. So maybe that's a local thing?

The OP was asking about Leer caps , but poorly worded by me maybe , I meant of the Leer caps only the commercial type comes with a reinforced roof as a standard feature .

    See above post .

Not sure whether the reinforcing you are talking about and the type I have on my RCC is the same , the roof of mine has aluminum crossmembers and is rated for 400lbs .

Could be it is offered as an upgrade , but then you would essentially be upgrading models to the commercial type , I would assume

thanks for all the input, I am going to try and call a place that sells leer caps and see what they say, I feel like if i drill properly and use enough silicone I will be able to prevent any leaks

I would call Leer directly. When I bought my cap two weeks ago I had to tell the dealer what Leer offered on it and how I wanted it. They were clue less as to what they were selling.

The roof basket is made by Baja Rack. Can take around 300 lbs. The Trac Rac ladder rack is another 800lbs. I haul a lot of speakers when we have gigs. The basket can take at least 3 big cabinet loaded with 15". The Top rack carries a big stage kinda platform with all the stands. Never had a problem... The bars that I used was from Home Depot. Kind of those bars they use in Road Sign... But I only use it on soft tops. I have couple of pics in my profile.
