One more thing I would add most of you guys are young but I'm going to tell you. use hearing protection, good ones I know it's not cool but if you want to hear when you get older it's a must with air tools drills, sanders and die grinders are the worst. If you want to know how I know this just ask but you'll have to talk loud.

So today I was using the Impact Wrench, and every once in a while it was acting up. Hoping you guys can help.

I was trying to take off a nut, had the PSI set to 90, had the wrench set to the highest speed (4), and when trying to get the nut off, it wouldn't get it off. I didn't let it hammer for longer than 5 seconds. I know it should be able to do it, they were lug nuts.

And then, I was trying to put a bolt IN, and I would go to drive it and it wouldn't turn, just make a sound of blowing air through it. I would then switch it to reverse, run it, then switch it back and try to run it back in, but it wouldn't budge the bolt it (the bolt was VERY loose, could tighten it with my fingers). Anyone have any idea of what's wrong? I haven't oiled it yet, could that be it? Any input? I could use all the advice I can get.

Sounds like you have either a defective wrench or perhaps haven't properly set the drive direction. Assuming of course, that the tank is filled and you are really putting 90 PSI to the tool. Which BTW, I would turn down to 70 PSI until you get the hang of it.

    Tools are usually pre-oiled.

I really got the hang of the tool, and I was pretty sure I had the drive set correctly... I can try it again sometime, but I was just surprised that the lugs wouldn't budge... I mean they're only set to ~= 85 ft/lbs...

If those are the air tools that come with the compressor chances are they're not very uhhh beefy.

Check on craigslist for a used IR mac/snap on/husky etc...

I picked my impact for 20$ on CL. An older but sweet IR gun. Keep looking for the deals!

Still sounds weird though. Check that it'll run without trying to drive something. Then break a lug free and see if it'll run it off. If it won't run it off then either something is wrong with the gun or user error.

If the lug nuts were put on by someone with an impact wrench, they'll be a bitch to get off--it sucks but that's the problem with air tools. People often use them and over tighten things. You can put stuff on snug then finish off the bolt/nut with a torque wrench.

I put them on, with my torque wrench, at 83 ft/lbs. I try to do all my own work on my truck.

    Oh sorry disregard then.

    Found it on sears' website.

300ft lbs should be enough to break lugs free but that's still not very much as far as impacts are concerned.

I dunno... If it's got pressure to it, and you've got it on the right setting and the F/R positively engaged it should theoretically have no problem taking off lug nuts.

If it's just blowing air and not doing any thing the impact clutch is jammed take it back and get another one.

x2 .... I didn't need hearing protection working around those aircraft 28 years ago; or so my 18 yr old brain told me. Regret it now.

    I agree.
