Anyone out there have a good or bad experience with pet insurance?

We got a new puppy 2 weeks ago and on Christmas Eve she some how got her leg caught in the back seat (My wife's car w/2 car seats) and chipped/broke the growth plate under her knee. I spent 3 hours and $500 at the emergency animal hospital on Christmas morning. X-rays, drugs and a splint until we get her into our vet (tomorrow morning) to find out if she needs surgery.

I doubt I can get this covered, but after these bills I am thinking it might be a good idea to get her some coverage. I have heard some bad things about them in the past, so I am looking for advice.

    Nada yet, just a Bestop
I use VPI, but more importantly, the wife and I opened up an "Emergency Pet Fund" with ING. We deposit X amount into it every month and have accumulated a substantial amount of money in it. We are covered on 2 fronts should anything occur. We have a chocolate lab who hunts and she eats almost anything she comes across. We have 2 cats as well, but they're pretty much maintenance free.

We use VPI with our 3 yr old Rottie. Had a similar experience when she was about 5 months old where she required surgery....$450 later I was signing up for it. Since then we send all her vet bills in and it covers a quite a bit. Small price to pay! I dig the emergency pet fund though, thanks for the idea!

We have started an "Emergency Pet Envelope" but it didn't have enough to cover this. I am thinking that having insurance for about 5 years or so, to build up our fund wouldn't be a bad idea.

I got spoiled, I had a dog for 15 years, he went to the groomer every month, but other than that, it was only check up visits at the vet.

we use vpi as well. After an experience with a previous dog that had bad kidneys and died at 18 months, we opted for the insurance for our next 2. Early on it almost pays for itself with all of the vaccinations .
