I have seen alot of people posting up here from Barstow, and every time I see a thread I tell myself I need to get a pic of this road sign. I finally remembered today!! I dont live far from Wilmington, NC where I-40 Ends/Starts, this is one of the first road signs you will see leaving Wilmington on I-40. So..... my question is, do you guys have a sign in Barstow stating the miles to Wilmington NC??? If so, I would really like to see it!!!:D

damn... that's funny... i have never seen a sign like that in Barstow... i think the only sign i can recall is one for Laughlin or Needles, but nothing that far...

    wow...

i wonder if they used Barstow as a reference point for that sign since it is along the original Route 66? at least i think it's in reference to that...

or am i thinking of the movie Cars?

    :D

I asked around to a few people and they said that they had heard that there was a sign in barstow at the end/start of I-40. This sign has been up for as long as I can remember, I am pretty sure it was there when I-40 was opened to wilmington. My friends and I often joke about just riding all the way to barstow just to see the sign that says wilmington. LOL!!

My wife and I now have a little girl fixin to be 14 months old. I dont think she would enjoy a 5100 mile roadtrip for a few years. Sometimes its all we can do to drive 20 miles!! LOL!!

Here you Go! hope to see the other one personally someday.
This sign is about 100 yards after turning onto I40. Caltrans has made a small pullout for people crazy enough to stop.

I was in Wilmington NC last summer and I even called the police before to get an idea where the sign was but I combed the area and I couldn't find it. Does it NOT exist anymore there? I went to the sign in Barstow a couple of weeks ago and it was exactly where it was supposed to be. I have seen a few other signs with great distances, namely both ends of US 50 and the eastern terminus of Interstate 70. I find these signs fascinating but not if I drive a long distance to see one and it's not there like Wilmington, NC

As far as I know it is still there. They were resurfacing that section of I 40 this past summer they may have taken it down for that, but I'm not sure.

When was the last time you saw it? I was there last summer and couldn't find it combing the area before I40 started. If you can give me an idea of where it is and also if it is to the right of the road as opposed to being in that center island. I can try to google earth it if you tell me approximately where it is but I swear I went very slowly and could not find it. I was just at the sign in Barstow, CA

You know I'm not really sure if it is there or not. I work near it and some people I work with drive past it everyday. I've asked them, they all know the sign I'm talking about but none recall seeing it recently. However I do work for NCDOT and I will question the sign department about it next time I see one of those guys. It should be located between exit 414 and 420. Mile marker 418 maybe. Sorry I can't help any more...

Update.... The sign hasn't been up for a year or so. The sign department said the sign had been stolen 5 times in a very short amount of time, so they decided not to replace it...

They need to find an overpass or some place higher up to put the sign so it is not easy to steal, like the past ones. Not sure why they don't think of that stuff. On I-70 just a mile or two west of the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) there is a distance sign, high up, that tells the distance to Columbus, OH, St. Louis, MO, Denver, CO and Cove Fort, UT, which is where that interstate ends.

I'm still trying to figure out how they stole it with no one seeing them. Plus the sign department guy said it was way higher off the ground than normal. Guess they just hooked to it, and pulled it over.
