anyone haul coal or pellets?

i just bought 1.2 ton of coal today....glad i had a 2.5 front, 2 inch rear lift!

 

When they were talking about weighting down the back with sandbags for extra traction in the snow... They were only talking about a couple 100 pounds man... Not 1.2tons lol

Last winter i had to haul a ton, broke it down to half a ton and did two runs, didnt want to run the risk of fucking anything up.

 

im gonna buy a trailer, but yes...this was veeerry verrry risky! haha....but we both (truck and i) made it back to the fort alright!

 

What is the limit in the bed?

 

Payload limit for a DCSB 4x4 is 1300 lb according to the Toyota press kit. OP was hauling 2400 lb.

Come to think of it, what are the harmful effects compared to towing the same load on a trailer with no brakes?

The truck's empty weight on the rear axle is 1828 lb. The 2400 lb load brings the axle weight to 4228 lb. The stock Rugged Trails are rated for 2185 lb per tire, or 4370 lb per axle.

Exactly why we took that ton and broke it down, HA thats a whole lotta weight on a tacoma axle.

 

Stresses the entire truck. Driveline, suspension, frame included... Get a trailer with brakes if you intend to do that enough. Rent a u-haul trailer if not. It's cheap for renting and returning to the same location.

 

Really? The driveline and axle can be THAT fragile, when they were designed to take low-range torque?

That is how tractor/trailer setups snap drivelines. Torque of the motor pulling a load. Most of the time the driveline snaps during takeoff and usually on an incline but same principle. With that much weight the engine has to get the truck moving. If the truck is overloaded for the drivetrain the failure will be at the weakest point which would be at the u-joint I would assume.

 

Reminds me of a brand new S10 I saw with a heaped load of gravel in the bed about twelve years ago. He made it just out of the gravel bed exit until the frame snapped in half. Overloading that much is not only very bad for the truck, but also very dangerous.

 

Did the store load it for you because I know that where I live they will not touch your truck with a pallet of anything, and it needs to be certified trailer to haul that weight. I assume you were riding the bump stops all way home too.

 

Thats one reason I keep the ol powerstroke around.

Load limits are there for a reason. Exceeding them significantly reduces the lifespan of your truck. Exceed them at your own peril, and everyone else's!

My wife took her 94 Toy years ago went to get some dirt for the garden and came back with a yard and a half it could have weighed as much as 1.5 tons or more the front end was 6" higher then the back and the tires looked flat but she did not brake any thing another 10 pounds and I think the front wheels would have been off the ground. When they first made Toyota motor homes they still had the semi floating axles and they weighed 6,000# they did brake axles until they were all recalled and had full floating rears installed
