i've heard different things, maybe someone in the field knows better, but I heard in new cars you can leave in for like 5K miles or so because its supposed to have lubricants in there, but I've also heard the opposite for things like motorcycles, how a brand new engine can have metal shavings so you wanted to get the oil changed asap, just somethin to think about, i dont really know

As a dealership technician (motorcycle) I can say that mistakes are made, does that mean all dealerships are untrustworthy? no. Can you do a better job yourself? maybe. After watching the Jiffy Lube video would I ever take a vehicle of mine there? no.

Here's what I will do with my 2012, mark the filter, mark the drain plug/crush (with a paint pen as we are required to do at my stealership), check the level, and insist/verify (to the best of my capacity) the quantity/quality of the oil used and enjoy the service that undoubtedly was already rolled into the deal. Really why pay for it twice.

It takes me 20 minutes to change my oil. It's not difficult to find 20 minutes of spare time. And the crush washer only needs to be replaced if you're experiencing a leak from the drain plug. Personally, I've never replaced a single crush washer on any vehicle and I've yet to see any leaks because of it.

the crush washer actually helps torque (and prevent over torquing) the drain bolt as well as seal. If you are going to the dealer to get a filter why would you not also get a crush washer?

And not to seem like a smart ass, but to all those who wont let anyone touch there truck how do you get your alignments and tire changes/balances?

I do my own tire changes and balances. Alignments I do have done by a professional...but only because I don't have the machine. They also won't blow your engine up if they fuck up an alignment.

Wrong. The drain plug crush washer should be replaced EVERY oil change. I'm glad you aren't a Toyota service tech.

Yes - although I forget the exact difference I recall reading on BITOG that EP was better. It might have to do with the base oils.

I do all my own tire mounting and balancing. I don't have access to an alignment rack, so I can't do that.

There's a difference between theoretical knowledge and real world experience. If you know what you're doing, there's no reason to replace it.

Haha...considering how often I actually need to mount and balance, I'll just buy my friends a beer and use their stuff.
