I have used a little bit of heat and a very mild abrasive. More like a rough rag than steel wool or sand paper to smooth scratches in dash panels etc in customers cars usually after someone stole there stereo but it only kinda works it makes them less obvious but they are still there. In my own car I usually just buy a new panel. ( yes I know it's overpriced).

5100 set to max, pending LSD and TRD CAI
Also flame Polish leaves a smooth texture so if the plastic is texted it would not match.
