I bought a locking cap after having my gas stolen. That lasted...mmm....about 2 weeks, maybe. I got sick of having to use the key.

Please let me catch someone doing that to my truck. Pretty please?! Sometimes I just wish someone would give me a valid excuse to cause bodily harm.

locking gas caps can be taken off with a pair of vice grips not that ive stolen any gas before I have bought cars before with them on and no key

the locking gas cap will make them work alittle bit more but most are to lazy to to do that

Most "locking" gas caps have a top that spins freely when locked. How do you use the vise grips to prevent the top from spinning? Or do you just rip the top off by force?

I got in touch with my homeless outreach guy, and he dittoed what the ex-trooper said. He said he never heard of gas stealing amongst the homeless addicts, but probably from a group with a higher function skill set that would more likely be found in the migrant labor force here, which is a sizable group post-Katrina. There's also a lot of scammers here, even locals who live on cheating the system (in fact the insurance detective was looking into a reported stolen car story that was suspect). Those that cheat and scam would be more likely to me than the laborers, but point taken that its stolen most likely for consumption, not sale.

But the main point is that whomever it is wants to continue doing it undetected and continue pilfering from the same, familiar neighborhood, so breaking a locking gas cap is leaving a calling card. Therefore I hope the simple use of the locking gas cap will be enough of a gentle deterrent for them to look for the next unprotected car (as the ex-cop/detective pointed out), kind of like a scuba diver gently nudging away a shark rather than pissing him off.

Well, fuck. Seems I have that one out of ten Tacomas that has that variance in the gas port, and the gas cap I bought at autozone did not fit, actually did not come close to fitting, so I am back to square one. At least I returned it after trying it out in the parking lot.

The part I got from autozone was this one, part #5909:

I had the same cap on my 06. I took it off after the 3rd fill up. Damn thing was a PITA. I have a new threaded locking cap that is much better.
