Hi all, this is my first post. I've owned a Toyota and an SUV in the pasted, but now I'm looking to buy my first truck. I'm considering the new 2012 Tacoma. Just wanted to do some research before I make a choice between models.

I have a family and I usually haul light weight items so I'm considering the 4 cylinder double cab prerunner. Anyone have a 2012 or previous year they care to tell me about. Unfortunately the double cab 4 cylinder only comes in auto as I would consider a manual. Had any previous year Tacomas come with double cab, 4 cylinder in manual transmission?

Any input is appreciated as I need a little help in making a decision. Thanks.

I have a 06 6 cylinder.. I have read the 4's get good gas but with kids I would just take the small amount of gas loss and get the auto 4 cyl IMO

I have a 2012 DCLB TRD Sport. Get the V6, the gas mileage saving arent really worth it.

Welcome to TW! For me I'd never get a Double Cab with a 4. It would be to under powered but that's just my opinion.

If you can afford it, go with the six-cylinder engine. You may even be able to get it with a manual transmission if that's what you prefer.

yea theres a good chance the the 4cyl couldnt be enough power for the double cab and it will actually get worse MPG cause it will struggle to pull the weight...ive seen this happen in a V6 powered F150 and a V8 powered 4-door F250

I have a 2012 DCSB V6. A buddy of mine bought the 4-banger and covets my truck (I think he's going to steal my wheels). [IMG]

I had a 2wd 4 banger 2006 from new. I always got in the 15's for MPG. I Traded it in 3 months ago for a 4x4 V6 DCLB. I am now getting in the 19's MPG. After driving the V6 I wish I would have spent the extra in 06 to get a V6. If I had done that I would not have had to trade it in. If you have any hills the 4 banger is useless with the cruz control.

So long story short if you have hills or a lead foot don't get the 4 banger its just under powered.

That certainly helps me narrow down my options. Thanks.

i had a 2010 access cab with a 4cyl manual... i don't do a lot of hauling, but i do a lot of highway/interstate driving. in my opinion, the 4cyl was totally underpowered on the interstate. hit a good 20mph head wind and it was really bad... i was downshifting on hills. if the only use was in town, i probably could have dealt with it. but i just grew to hate driving that thing on the highway. i ended up trading up to a 2012 double cab 6cyl and i ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. night and day as far as i'm concerned. the gas milage with the 4 is better in town for sure, but honestly, i don't think there was much difference on the interstate becasue of all the downshifting i was doing for passing and hills. now, that's my personal driving style. i like to set the cruise at 75mph and not think about it again until i get to where i'm going. that wasn't possible with the 4cyl. at those speeds, with even a little bit of wind, the 4 is going to be sucking gas and running at a high RPM. and i might add, the only saving grace for me with the 4 was that it WAS a manual. i can not imagine running an auto 4 in a double cab. the six is some more cash up front ($2500?), but could save you a lot of regret for the next several years.
