    stock, for now
ive been a volly for 8 years now. I havent showed up alot the last year or so, work is kicking my ass. Everything we do/get is paid for. I dont lay a dime out of pocket. I think that idea will deter alot of people from joining. Its fun when I can get the time to show, alot of perks in it as well. I have state issued license plates(had to pay DMV extra for them), that helps keep me out of trouble when I have been pulled over a few times. Just get in and learn, ya never know when someone on the company can help you out other wise(jobs, references etc)

I was a volunteer for 4 years, wouldn't trade a day in my life for the things I got to do, and the people I was fortunate to encounter, and help. It was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Depending on your dept, is really how your experience is.going to go. You will get a couple fuck heads. And then you will have your awesome guys who will show you the ropes, stick with it, be in their back pocket, and absorb as much as possible. Also take any and every training they offer you as humanly possible, those certs do transfer.

Thought I might drop a line here. I too just recently decided to see about joining my local Fire Department. Our Township has a "Paid On-Call" set-up, so it is more than volunteer, but not a full-time position. This also means that I have to be "hired" by the Twp. Board. I have interviewed with the chief and he is approving me for hire! Which he says the board pretty much lets him decide who makes it on or not.

Unfortunately the next meeting is Feb. 13th, so I am just waiting till then! The chief says he then will get my gear, helmet, pager, etc. and I will be responding to calls with current members till the fall when I can take my FF1 and FF2 course.

I was a volunteer FF EMT for a large bay area department in California. Loved it! Had to turn in my gear a year ago due to a ruptured LF/S1 disc and back surgery.

Like an earlier poster said...training is everything. Also don't be one of the guys that says they are a VFF but never shows up for drills, events or incidents or does 12/24 hour shifts.

Thanks man. I am excited to join!! It is a small dept., but they seem to keep it a very professional outfit. Trainings by-weekly and occasional Saturdays. Everyone I have meet so far seems to be committed, so that is a confidence booster.
