Violent shaking, sometimes

New to this site, not sure how to ask... my 2004 toyota tacoma has developed a violent wobble/shake that starts at about 68 mph, and continues if I am down to say, 40mph... will not stop until I stop the truck. When I start back on the road it's gone... New tires a few months ago, and no problems, new wheel bearings last summer, no problems... Any ideas?

Have you had your tires balanced recently?

 

New tires a few months ago, balanced and installed by the mechanics, last wobble was wheel bearings...This time it comes and goes... really would like suggestions before I approach either mechanic or toyota

Years ago I had warped front brake rotor that did a similar shake and wobble. It was not constant, it took a series of bumps or other situations to trigger it. Like your, stopping the vehicle, it stopped as well. I then could start out again without problems. Turning the rotor cured it.

This is only a possible solution. I do think yours is a wheel related, not drive shaft or other.

 

X2 on the death wobble. Another member on here had the same problem, and I believe the only problem was that his lugnuts were not properly torqued

 

Death wobble occurs when you hit a bump and it sents the steering out of control and the only way to stop it is stop the truck completely and it can happen at highway speeds.

If it was wrapped rotors it would occur if she was stoping the truck, i had horribly warped rotors on my old Tacoma twice and it got soo bad that the whole truck just shook and vibrated, but once again it only occured when stopping and it was real bad when i was slowing down from a high speed.

OP which sounds more like your situation?

Mine could be triggered by a series of bumps. It did not show up during braking. So perhaps mine wasn't as warped, who knows.

 

From my experience atleast thats what happened, but warped rotors can affect vehicles in different ways
