Any ideas for DishNetwork, or do I get to miss out on this "mod"?

They have models that support external USB hard drives:

This article is about 1 1/2 years old so I'd search on your DVR model number plus "external drive"

Or, you could use Windows Media Center. I've used it for years... Infinitely better user interface than any of the other DVRs I've seen.

I like the Tivo interface (I have both Tivo and Cox's DVR). Plus, there are lots of good options for DVR on computers. Tivo offers it's interface for use on a computer for $99 per year for electronic download.

A free Tivo-ish Linux-based system is MythTV. You'll need a TV processor card, preferably one that does encoding/decoding on the card (WinPVR 3).

Thanks! I'll check this out...I don't remember my model number, but I just got it last Spring, so hopefully it's on there.
