Toycoma92, I think it's best that you not comment on something you don't know about.

EMTs go through a lot of training including the exact same situation that you just described.

Off-topic again, but yes, like the others have said, it is not your job at all to decide who "deserves" saving. We get training on this very type of situation and get taught what we are required to care for. All people are entitled to receive the same standard of care regardless of what they have done. Although this guy doesn't sound like a stand- up citizen, you must do everything within your scope of practice to save that person's life if it is in danger.

    /off-topic-ness over.

Back to the OP, glad everything turned out okay. Good luck with the professional check-up.

The guy's kid was maybe 18 months old. He was sitting in the car wailing while we were trying to get the guy to snap out of his stupor (before LEOs/EMS arrived). My wife picked up the baby and got him calmed down. It was cold out so she sat him in the back seat of my truck and she and my son kept him entertained while EMS worked on his dad. When they were ready to roll they were about to take off without the kid. It dawned on me that I could probably trade the kid for an ARB front bumper on craigslist, but I wasn't sure they make them for 2012s yet. :p So...we passed him off to the EMS cats.

Within the first week of owning my truck, I clipped my own garbage bin while backing out of the driveway, resulting in an inch-long scratch. To repair it, I bought one of these...

Attention all EMS personel! If you find me in this same situation my handgun is in the center console, shoot me in the head and then in the face for good measure. Dispose of the firearm immediately, thanks.

ypu make no sense with this argument your story relates to nothing of what they are talking about your situation describes an uncontrolable force where it could happen to anybody

You can't think like that :) Even the worst of POS don't deserve that...plus it's not for you to decide. Let someone else sort it out. Atleast, that's the discipline I follow. You'll go to heaven, they wont. hah.

I'm a little late to the party sorry but...
When I arrive on scene how do I know what this person has or hasn’t done in his or her lifetime?? Should I start asking questions to family members asking if they are a good person? What if this 70 year killed someone when he was 18? Now that they are 70 and having a heart attack do they deserve to die when I arrive?

So you are sitting on the couch and your dad/mom, grandpa/grandma, aunt/uncle has a heart attack. You call 911 and I respond to the scene. Does it matter that they may or may not be the be the best or worse person on the planet? To you it doesn't matter, it's a family member and they need help regardless. What if we live in a small town and I know for a fact that they are a piece of shit, I decide to not help them... Then what???
You and your family are going to sue me for everything I have and win. How does that work?? I have helped 1,000 good folks and let 1 bad apple die. I entered a profession to help people but I still manage to loose everything I have worked for.

When you arrive on scene it doesn't matter why you are there. Regardless if you have responded to them for the 100th time, they are high as kite, drunk as a skunk, or having a serious medical emergency you are responsible for the patient. You were dispatched and YOU are responsible for the patient regardless of the situation. Most folks don't know but you have a legal responsibility to care for this person regardless of the situation. The funny thing is, well it's not really funny but, somebody is more likely to take me to court because I made a typo in my paperwork than because I made an error in my treatment. You are there because this person is in need of medical attention. Being in EMS,fire, or police you will rarely ever know the whole picture unless it happens to be family member. This person could be having the worst day of his life and have made the worst decision of his life all in the same day. I am not there to judge the person, only to do what I can. I am not saying that it is ok whatever he did for whatever reason but I am still there for the same reason. My only hope is that I will be treated just like a family whenever I am in my time of need.
OP way to be heads up and observant with what is going on around you. I'm sure you could have just as easily swerved into the other lane and cause some more carnage.

I entered the profession to help people. I will let the almighty, whoever that may be, decide when people come and go.
