Wheels and tire selection and fitment

Hey guys/gals,

I am new here and have been reading alot about tire and wheel fitment on the 2nd Gen Tacomas. I have an 07 DC 4x4 Sport and I am looking to lift and run new wheels and tires with a 3" lift.

I am trying to find the right combo for wheel size (17x9 or 18x9) with 4.5" os (-12) and tires (265/70 or 75, 275/65 or 70, 285/65 or 70, etc) . I want the Moto 951 with either the BFG A/T or the Nitto Terra Grapplers.

Lift: Toyotec 3" - Coilovers and AAL (ultimate) preferably but may go with the spacer lift to save some coin.

My issue is the Rubbing/Trimming problems that people have referred to. I dont want to do either and would like to find the right combo so that I dont have to. I want a meatier looking tire that thas a good stance. Maybe a lower profile and wider, taller and skinnier or tall and wide??? Fitment is key, especially offroad

Hopefully I can start a thread where people can post pics with descriptions. I am sure that there are a few out there but all of them range in conversation and content. Thanks for your help

 

I believe with a 3" lift you can run a 32" diameter tire without rubbing and some 33" (correct me if I'm wrong I don't have a lift), note that sizes vary by manufacturer.

Moto Metal 951 17's or 18's the specs are 6/5.5, 4.5" backspacing and -12 offset, and they will fit.

I suggest 17's to save some $$ on both wheels and tires.
I have MotoMetal 957B's in 17x9 with Nitto TG's 265/70/17 without a lift, check my album for pics. They stick out about an inch from the fenders looking down the side, so I really like the stance. They are a less aggressive look than BFG A/T in my opinion, but I have no complaints with them. I believe they are also cheaper, I found them for about $120/tire and same for the rims.

Search around in the tire/wheel area and you will find some pics, try searching for MotoMetal and see what you get.

Thanks for your reply back and this does help. I think the 17s are the way to go, but wasnt sure about the 18s. I am getting a killer deal on the tire and wheel combo, it didnt matter if they were 17s or 18s. How do you like the Nittos? DO they perform well offroad? I have always been a huge fan of the BFG a/ts but the nittos have more of a selection.

 

If you don't mind saying what is your 'killer deal' ?

I have no complaints about the Nittos. They have low almost no highway noise, great traction on wet roads, it doesn't snow here but heard they handled well in snow. They are great in sand, most of my offroading is in the dunes. Last weekend I went on a trail run for the 1st time and they handled great, I had no issues with them at all (and I have P rated, not LT) I was a little worried about how they would hold up on rocks/trails, and I have no damage. We went through a little mud and I didn't have any issues there either. So for moderate offroading in all conditions they seem to work great and hold up well. I have only had them for 5 months so I can't comment on tread life.

 

Looks like a ton of fun. Thanks for your comments on the tires. I currently live in CA and will be heading back to OH soon. SInce your pretty popular on this site, do you know anyone with the nittos that lives in a colder climate.

The deal is 60% or so on the wheel and tire combo. My friend knows a friend who knows a friend, ya know. I need to get back to him regarding the size - probably 17x9 with the 285/70's. SOunds like that is what most of the folks are running on here. I just dont want to trim anything... We will see.

 

I have Nitto Dune Grapplers in a cold climate... handled the snow / ice this morning pretty well... my STTs last year seemed to be a bit better...

 

How well does your tread hold up on those? I heard the tread life is not very good. How long have you had them?

 

I don't usually pay much attention to where people are located, but if you search the wheels and tires posts for Nitto then you will find some posts to browse. They are a popular tire on this site .

i am in the same boat - sort of. I have toytec C/o and TC UCA and blocks out back and i run 285/75/16 BFG A/T on 16x8 AE alloy wheels. They rub a little and I have trimmed a little. No problem there though. I have decided on the Nitto Terra grapplers for tires but debaing what size tires and wheels to go with. Pros and Cons of different sizes? seems like17" wheels are better selection. i am looking for new wheels and tires now.
