Keep your cool in situations like this, guys. I've done virtually the same (knocked softly on a door and tried the knob late one night) after getting crappy directions from a friend. He ended up being out of town longer than expected and called to ask me to check his house. I did so after getting off work at midnight. I was confused by vehicles in the driveway (which I didn't recognize), so I knocked softly just in case I had the wrong house. With no answer, I tried the door knob, which was locked. At that point, I decide not to push it any further. Later, I asked for better directions and discovered I was indeed at the wrong house.

And people wonder why some cops are occasionally in a bad mood. Imagine having to deal with that (drunks, druggies, etc at their worst) on an almost daily basis. I'm rather amazed so many cops are able to maintain their sanity while dealing with such madness. Cops deserve some respect just for that alone.
