Normal oil use is just over 1/2 quart in 3000 miles.

did you do the previous oil change yourself or have it done somewhere? Also if your truck is 11 years old and only burning 1/4 quart of oil over 3,000 miles I would not complain too loudly. :)

Well 1/4 is not a big deal. as you have seen. But there are many reasons.

If you Oil that your drain is not the color you like, do a Oil flush.
    with AFT fluid....

also think about adding Marvel mystery oil to your Fuel and Oil, about 100 miles before your next change. If for some reason your rings are getting stuck this might help. This may do nothing or it may work or it may destroy your car.

Research and do what you feel is good....

Or leave it as it and check the oil every fill up..

1/4 quart on a 10 year old vehicle is nothing. Keep on driving! In fact thats pretty decent for any engine.

When I owned my 96....(3.4L), it would be down 1/2 quart every 4,000 miles (or about half-way down on the dipstick).

I was using Mobile 1 - which tends to seep further/deeper into engine parts. I actually found my oil pan was seeping a bit just not enough to justify the oil loss. I ended up crawling underneath and tightening the oil pan a bit (what I could reach). I wasn't alarmed by the oil consumption at all. The truck had 110k miles on it. Truck always ran fine and I always kept an eye on things.

Just make note of that and keep an eye on it - in case it gets worse and/or if you develope leaks somewhere.

Good point on the synthetics. You might try switching to a non synthetic or high mileage blend. Could be if you're using synthetic that it's just a little thin and leaking by something.
