Can you replace the subs in a JL Stealthbox?

I'm trying to buy a JL Stealthbox, just seems like the best option for me, but I'd like a little more power than what comes with it. Would it be possible to replace the JL subs with more powerful ones?
I want the drivers side box for 2005+ doublecabs with 2 10" subs.

 

No experience with the stealthbox, but JL audios are top of the line speakers I wouldn't change them just tune you amp changing the crossover frequency to get the low bass you probably want

 

If your going to do that then build your own box to match the subs you want. I wouldn't mess with the JL box.

 

They are designed specifically for those speakers. If you can get subs that require the same depth and cf of airspace, then sure?

As long as the replacment speakers match the box specs then youll be fine. JL doesnt put in any fairy dust or snake oil in the boxes.

 

That would be a huge waste of money and the box is set up for those woofers. The mounting depth and volume are wrong for any alternative you may be thinking of.

 

JL subs are far from top of the line besides maybe a w7

 

First, they do a passenger side box for the DC with 2 10" subs. I dont think they do anything for the driver side, but I havent looked for a while...

Subs dont have power, or make power. Amps do. If you want more "power", get a bigger amp.

The are designed to fit, and they shove subs in them. They are not a very good match, and depend heavily on cabin gain to make up for a too-small enclosure. But they do look good, fit well, and work well for many happy customers.

Again? We all get it. Put a line in your sig that says you dont like JL, and bow out. You dont have anything positive, or helpful to say, so why bother?

 

Not many choices with our mounting depth requirements. JL has several subs that are good for our application. A W7 certainly is not fitting.

 

There are tons more options other than JL for under 6 inch mounting depth. And I never said a w7 would fit behind the seat....

 

Massive fail on my part, for some reason thought the steering wheel was on the passenger's side when I posted this. It is passenger side.

I've also been on a lot of other threads where people are confused about what kind of amp to run to this (different sites say different ohms), suggestions?

 

The subs are wired to 2 ohm, per their site : The Hard Data: ....Wired for 2 ohm mono.

The same page lists power handling at 600w.

But if you look at the subs that are in the box (10w1 V2), they list the optimal power at 150-200w range, with a max rms at 300w. So if you run a 600w amp, you will be at their theoretical max.

I would look for anything in the 300-500w @ 2 ohm range (the difference in volume between 400 and 600w is about 2db, not significant enough to matter) and enjoy. If you have, or want a bigger amp, it should not be a problem, but it is not needed.

 

I prefer the W6v2 over the W7 all day.

 

Just had a stealthbox installed last night and the base is just fine...if youre entering competitions id say get something different...but these subs are drowning out my focals(front and rear) at max gain. I would recommend these to anyone that wants a clean sub enclosure with decent speakers in em. My .02.

 

Please tell me your amp for your speakers are not really running max gain(turned all the way to the right, to the lowest number), or that they have a hi/lo switch. Something.

If so, its probably time to start shopping soon.

 

Random question, what is the theoretical maximum wattage output of a stock tacoma? No added batteries, beefed up electronics or anything.

 

I had my system professionally installed and tuned. Because I kept the stock head unit he tinkered with the audio control unit to make it sound clean. By gain I meant the bass adjustment knob he installed on my dash. He assured me if I turned it all the way up the subs would be at their best...however "at their best" is still hitting so hard that it drowned out my focal v30's up front and the pc165's in the back. I have the bass knob at about 3/4 max and it sounds perfect. Keep in mind that I will be going back in about two weeks to retune everything...I guess there's a break in period for the focals. They in fact do seem to be getting better sounding the longer I use them. I had the same concern about the 10w1's in the box...wanted to put at least w3's in it... but the box is built specifically for these subs and i trust JL techs to get it right...they did as far as I'm concerned.

 

I have the stealthbox and they hit extremely hard for their power. They took me by surprise when I first heard them and they work very well for all music genres. My advice is to stick with the JL subs, they are better than you think.
