Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Mag. Awesome gun! And it's not really that much of a handful.

My wife loves shooting my XDM 9 sub-compact. Comes w/ three different backstraps, to make the grip large or small.

    :wave:Hi Nic!

Hadn't come across this thread before. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Sounds like BS red tape that he didn't qualify for unemployment. :( Hope things get better for them soon.

When ya'll get around to gun shopping again, take a look at a Ruger P345 (45ACP ammo). I wasn't looking for a auto pistol, but after shooting a friends, I had to have one. I shot his one time and was more accurate with it than any handgun I'd ever shot before. And I maintained handgun qualification most of my Air Force career (38 and later 9mm). The P345 is my primary home defense and carry weapon now. They're well built, American made, and reasonably priced.

Hunting and fishing my sidearm is a Ruger Redhawk 44mag w/ 5 1/2 inch barrel. But our Bears is BIG up here. My partner carries a S/W 500 (50 cal). Both of those are probably a little heavy for your application. They pack a wallop! We shoot them when we go to range to maintain competency ... but usually after 20 to 30 rounds we say enough....both will make your hand sore throwing lead down range repeatedly.

It comes down to finding the weapon that you're comfortable with in the caliber that fits your intended application.

I think a 45ACP would stop/deter the normal size Appalachian Black Bear and most other critters or creepers in your region.

    That's my advice, FWIW. :)

Well I couldn't help but stumble across this one. Some how Trucks, and guns seem to go hand in hand (well how else do hunters get their meat to their house?) (oh and I only would do hunting for sustenance living, but I live in a city, so I go to the grocery store). Anyway. I want a gun (um 3 of them actually, maybe four). I want a Glock 19, a Ruger LCR 38 revolver, and a 22 rifle (the most common rifle in america, but the only one I can lift, and that matters).

And the tip about having her try out guns she wants, that is a must. Don't push guns on her she doesn't want. It will make her mad. I also recommend the book The Cornered Cat. I am reading it right now and its great.

haha no worries she wont let you do it anyhow. People kept suggesting the 9mil, she dont want it  momma wants what she wants. she was an old school looking one, with some power but not a whole lotta power...picky thing she is.

oh another rifle for you to look at similar IMO to the 22 is the .243 its not heavy, not super long, and not a hard recoil. Nice rifle, i took it hunting once  you should try it out. im not sure if mines is like a juniors or something...i think it has a shorter stock on it.

For a revolver I'd suggest a S&W or Ruger 4" barrel, 357 Mag. Short enough to carry, long enough to have a decent sight radius. You have a choice of 38 special, 38 +p, 38+p+ or 357 mag . 38 special is easy to find and nice for practice. 357 mag for the serious jobs.

My only problem is finding holsters for my tiny bony body. I also have curves. So I am skinny but curvy. So which one do you ladies recommend, I was thinking for starters, getting a shoulder holster, with the gun facing sideways rather then up. Actually saw one on a tv show, castle. And really thought that may work for me. I don't know about IWB because of my hips, a thigh holster seems to be just fine for me, but not right now. I am sort of wanting something where I can grab it easily. I even looked at the scotte vest. So I'm looking around. I am really concerned about hiding that double action revolver. So any really good shoulder holsters out there that have the gun lie sideways rather then up and down, that would be for a revolver?

I probably will use three different methods, depending on the occasion. So all i want are tips. The thigh holster looks good for the days I'm wearing dresses. The purse holster is only for a specific time (i have basically decided those times will be pregnancy, and when carrying other methods just does not work). I would practice with all of them. I just wanted to see how you ladies deal with these different methods. If you look for any boards that have more women talking about it. Please let me know.
