Ooohhhh and I know I said that would be my last wedding, but I, as of this morning, was asked for a quote on another wedding in August. So...might be doing another one.

It's not always necessary to get L glass not is it desirable. In some cases, you're better off not. The Nifty 50 is a good example. Same with the 35.

The nifty fifty is a shit a lens. For the price, it's an ok lens. However, I'd rather have the 50 f/1.4 over the 50 f/1.2L, and certainly over the 50 f/1.8.

I'd rather have a 24-105 f/4L over a 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens as an all purpose lens. There are very few cases where a standard USM lens beats out an L series lens, especially if you're doing professional work. The 50 f/1.4 is one of them.

Jeez! I almost went down there last week. You must be in the new resort part. How is that? I've only been to the coffee place and a couple of the restaurants in that hood. The bakery closer to 395 is where i usually stop for coffee when I'm heading to Bishop.

    Just the basics
Canon has announced (last month) a new high end point and shoot, the G1X:
    http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canong1x/page1.asp

I find some pros and cons with the G1X but as of now Canon is saying the G12 will remain in production for another year so there is time to decide which to replace my trusty G9 with.

Exactly what I thought! But I'm sure there are different models that have differences in quality, the picture of the camera is just what I found to show you guys what was probably used to take that "interactive" pano!

Anybody have thoughts on the Sony Nex 5N. Im a novice and would like something small but good all around quality for family stuff,backpacking/fishing trips, and work photos. Of coarse with a little room to grow.

Newbie question..what's the difference between UD and USM? Google'd it but still confused..

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-18-135m...GTT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329412467&sr=8-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-28-135m...I53S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1329412467&sr=8-3

I think I've narrowed it down to this lens that I want for my multipurpose, carry all the time lens. I wish the f-stop was a little lower but from what I can see the lower the f-stop the higher the price. Currently have the starter kit lens(18-55) and a telezoom(55-200 I believe). Feel free to throw suggestions out there. I am willing to spend about $500 for new lens..

UD refers to a coating on the glass. USM is the motor technology that drives Autofocus.

Does that help or do you want more?

Between those two, go for the 28-135. The 18-135 is crap.

... ^^^ ... How do you guys know which lens is best and which is "crap" ?? Is this your experience(s) or are you guys reading reviews or what ?

Don't get me wrong, I respect the advice on here ... I am getting ready to buy a 35mm DSLR a new lens or two.

But I looked at those same 2 lens and read the reviews and would have probably picked the "crap" lens from what I had read. This is my problem with lack of experience, I guess.

Back to my original question ... how did you guys (derekabraham & ruggedT) know which was the best lens ??

Also, do you guys have a idea on what you would pick with a complete budget of about $2,000 for a DSLR and a good lens or two ?? Also, where would you buy it ??

Thanks and I value all opinions ... :D

PS .. Would love a metal body on the DSLR if possible. I wanted the new Nikon D800, but that camera is too rich for my blood for my needs.
