I know a guy who bought a heavily modified VW GTI in the states and brought it up but his dad is the general manager at a Canadian Tire so I guess he had help getting it passed

I have no issues dealing with Canadian Tire for inspections as a find most "inspectors" do the bare minimum, if that.
I have brought 4 vehicles, including my brand new Tacoma from the States and every inspection, including RIV, safety and e-test they just sat in the car to fill out the paperwork, never even put it up on a lift.

I just brought over a 2010 Lexus RX350 a couple of weeks ago, and it didn't have proper DRL's, Canadian Tire didn't even notice.

Having said all this, I personally wouldn't take the risk trying to import a noticibly modified vehicle, not worth the hassle too much money at stake.

i would make some calls but I'm almost positive that it won't fly, even if you get it passed the border it will never pass the provincial inspection, i recently moved from calgary to victoria and looked into changing my registration to BC but they said in order to pass the BC inspection everything had to go back to stock and my lift had to come off, that being said it might be different in Manitoba so if i were you make some calls and find out.

I also had a buddy buy a ram 3500 fully loaded with lift and everything brand new straight for the dealer and it didn't pass, had to buy all the stock parts ended up costing him a fortune

BC is very anal to when it comes to out of province vehicles. AB is no different then BC, well unless you get some who can pass it(wink, wink). You are correct though. When it comes to autos going into BC they have to be put back to stock.

Not a Tacoma, but I sold a pretty heavily modified miata to a guy from BC. He had his paperwork in order and was a bit worried, but he didn't have any problems.

The RIV inspection is very simple. It's not like a provincial inspection. They look for KM on the speedometer, they look for day time running lights, they look for ignition immobilizer, and in some cases, bilingual stickers. ANY mods, and they can refuse to pass it.

I fell in love with a 2004 lifted taco from michigan in 2008. I called RIV over and over, and I never got anywhere. Then I found my new 2008 Taco in the USA. Picked up a fabtech performance lift, and ProComp wheels with 35's on my way home... As pictured in my sig file... Once I was past all the inspections, I installed all the goodies. After all was said and done, I was into my Taco for $32k. New ones on the lot locally were $34k plus taxes. So I was happy with how much I saved.

I bought my truck in New York and imported it into Ontario. Lift kits are definitely not allowed and it's specified in the import guidelines.

If you make it through, you got lucky.

Find a good stock truck, source the lift kit in the US and install it after you get your import clearance and licensing.

I second this. I just imported my tacoma 2 weeks ago, and it specifically states on the RIV inspection form that if the vehicle has a lift, the inspection facility MUST contact RIV immediately.

Not worth the hassle imo. Unless you remove the lift and then put it back on after the inspection.

I picked up my Tacoma about 1.5 year ago and it had the front billies set at 2.5 and a block in the back with after market wheels on the truck and the stock ones in the bed when I crossed the AB/MT border. No one looked at my truck down there.
When I got my inspection form to take to CT it said that they must call RIV if the truck is equipped with a lift (I didn't think billies would count as a lift, but was a lil worried). Took the truck in for inspection and it was a younger guy doing the inspection, all he looked at was my tires, didn't look in the truck or for DTRLs.
It totally depends who you run into at CT, but it may not be worth the trouble if it has an actual lift kit on it, could get expensive quick.

Depends on how far it is. I drove mine home, but that's only from Seattle to Vancouver (3hrs). I was looking at one in San Diego and I probably would have got that delivered. Delivery for that was $600-1200 depending on how quickly you want it, top or bottom of the trailer etc.

I drove 3 of the cars I bought home, it depends on the state I bought them from.

NY and PA it was easy to get temp permits from. The last Lexus I got was from FL and it was expensive to get a temp permit as you now have to pay state tax.
I had it shipped from Orlando to Niagara Falls NY for $590.

a delivery might be a great option from a price stand point. when you drive it home at least you get to see the vehicle first before you buy. sounds like a fun road trip to the states.

I've driven 4 vehicles home, new York city, Dallas, Houston, and Greensboro, all the way to Calgary/Red Deer area. I flew in and in most cases (except new York) the dealers picked me up at the airport. I loved the road trips home! In all purchases, dealers provided temporary plates good for 30 days. My current Taco came from Winnipeg.... That was a boring drive home... Manatoba is sooo flat, swear to god you can see the curvature of the earth just by watching the road ahead.

For sure! I would still need to see the vehicle before I buy it.
