Trying to set up iPad video for the kids

I have tried searching, and I'm still too new to find the right info I guess.

I have the 2012 Tacoma with the NON-Entune setup. It works great for streaming audio from my iPhone, it works great in using my old school iPod through the USB (and the iPhone as well).

Now what I want to do is hook up the video system for the kids using an iPad I have laying around here instead of having to buy a DVD system. I already ordered a bracket I can mount the iPad to the back of my headrest so both kids can see it.

Now the question is what cables I need. When I synced up the iPad audio to try to get the movie to play with the audio coming through the vehicle sound system the screen was just blank. I guess that's a safety issue? It doesn't want me hooking it up and watching a movie as I drive I suppose.

So I'm wondering.... is the only way I can get this to work is to run out of the iPad headphone jack and into the Aux port (3.5 mm port?), and then run an iPad charger cable up to a cigarette lighter charger to keep it powered up on long trips?

I was hopeful I could just use one long usb cable to do the whole thing, or run the sound through the bluetooth hookup as the charge stays pretty well on the iPad and basically have a wireless solution while we're taking 2-3 hour drives.

Any ideas on how to get this going? If my only options are to just get a long 3.5mm cable for audio and a cigarette lighter cable then I guess that's what I'll do and try to find a way to feed them down there without uglying everything up and getting wrapped up in cables as we travel... but I would love to know what setups others have used when trying to achieve the same endgoal of setting up video for the kids without having to add a whole DVD system. It would make things WAY simpler for me (and cheaper as I already own an iPad and we got the digital download of most Disney/Pixar movies we bought that we loaded onto the iPad from day 1).

    Thanks.

Thanks Whippersnapper. How do their units hook up in a Tacoma? I remember in the Pathfinder they just made a cool cable that ran into the changer port and converted it to an ipod charger/dock connector, but that was several years ago. Have they made stuff that overrides the "lockout" feature I seem to be experiencing? I searched around and couldn't find what exactly I was looking for, but I may be looking at the wrong stuff.

I can't tell if it is the stereo system telling the ipad not to display video, or the iPad is refusing to show video because it knows it is hooked up to a stereo system in a vehicle. Does that make sense? Either way... no video = no fun for the kids. ;) I just like to listen to the movies while I drive through the speaker system. We have a dvd player that came with our Pilot and it works great for long trips. The kids watch the movies in the back seat and we listen and enjoy them as we've already seen them 100 times, but it makes the trip go faster.

I just hate always having to swap out discs, and having scratched disc issues, hiding them in the glove box, having the discs get too hot in the car etc. I'd rather use my iPad in the Tacoma and bring it into the hotel with me. No hauling around DVD's and switching them out on the road when the kids complain. They can just select another movie on the touchscreen themselves.

I use the iPad through the radio with the 3.5 headphone port to the aux port (on my other vehicles - my Tacoma is too old to have an Aux port - it still has a casette deck  ). The iPad battery usually lasts long enough for a movie or two, but if you need to you can charge it through the USB cable as you have mentioned.
It works fine - you should not have any issues with it. If you don't want 2 cables, wrap them together with velcro strips.

I would like to see a photo of your headrest bracket.

^X2! Just get an Aux connection and you video should still play on the ipad and the audio should go thru the sound system in the truck. now im pretty sure if you hook thru the Ipad cable you will not get the video to play on the iPad and the audio thru the sound system due to apple software. Another possibility is connect thru Bluetooth, thats how I listen to all my music from my iphone. And the video should still play on the device.

I'm using this iPad for GPS + compass with the cellular, wifi and bluetooth OFF. I have preloaded FREE maps for offline viewing using MotionX GPS HD. VERY slick!

When the iPad is in the rear seat area my son uses headphones/earbuds. When I want to listen to the audio out of the iPad or my iPod Touch 4g over the stereo AUX, I use and highly recommend the SendStation Pocket Dock with Line Out & Mini USB.

This is my rear seat mounting solution using RAM hardware:

I went this route because it can be removed easily with no trace and the RAM hardware can be used to mount ANYTHING. Tonight I stuck the iPad + cradle onto a long arm and a 1" ball suction cup mount stuck to my kitchen table. Helps prevent neck strain and it works slick with a USB keyboard. :)

I ordered the Ram mount from eBay plus an extender (1" with a ball at each end) and then another extender (6"). I will mount it all tomorrow and show pictures of my setup. The Ram stuff is top quality. It just won't make it between the seats for easy viewing by both rear passengers without adding a few pieces (which cost a lot of cash... but at least they are durable).

The problem I'm running into now is that where it mounts on the headrest pole it is not tight enough. The thing just slides down. I'm going to pick up a few rubber washers to make it fit over those a bit more snugly and will have a pretty good system for the kiddos to watch movies while we travel. It's been kind of a pain to figure it all out. But in the end it will be worth it as it is way less expensive than buying a DVD system (but only because I already own the iPad). Buying the iPad and the mount would be about equal to a good quality DVD system, but I like how I can take this out at night and use it in the hotel room as we travel. It just snaps right out so I don't have to worry about it getting stolen and can use it for surfing the internet, trip planning, etc. etc.

I wrapped my headrest pole with black Rescue Tape. It is a non-sticky silicone tape that only sticks to itself. This made the pole a bit thicker and keeps everything nice and tight once I clamped down on the U-bolt.

That's a funny coincidence... I was looking through my plumbing bin for some rubber washers to use and found a roll of that silicone rubber tap and was thinking I would use that if I didn't find a rubber washer that fit snugly. Great minds think alike eh? ;)

Ok, rescue tape gives up the ghost after about two weeks. It starts sliding a bit. I'm going to epoxy it this weekend. Once I get the RAM mount just right, I'll put up more info. What you see above is how you want it mounted (ball facing backward rather than sideways). I also have a ram cup holder mount. They are crap for iPads because the weight just makes them bounce and they flop down after about 20 minutes of driving.

I did some driving around the Anza-Borrego desert in late April and the ball mount did rotate a bit on the post after a day off-road but I just swung it right back and it stayed pretty well the rest of the weekend. It made me think your idea of using rubber washers would work better since it shouldn't pinch and tear the way the rescue tape does when you clamp down on the U-bolt.

Did you ever try the rubber washers?

Did you use the RAM cup holder mount with the goose neck? I wonder if the stiff aluminum socket arms would work better.

I've been thinking about mounting a diamond plate w/ball on top of the RAM-a-can II. I would then use some combination of long/medium/short arms and double-ball connectors I already own to put the iPad at the correct height. I wanted something portable to use in other vehicles but I haven't purchased the RAM-a-can base yet.

I'm in the process of tearing my dash/console apart today running cables and working on a ipad mount solution for the front seats. I want to use this angled base w/ball or maybe this flat base w/ball. I want to mount one of them where HomerTaco mounted his L-bracket.

Edit: I ended up doing this in the same spot.
    :)
