My DC sub box build - Pics included

I know how much everyone likes looking at pictures, so here's my first real attempt at making a subwoofer box. I have basic construction skills but in no way am I a pro and this is not my attempt at writing a how to.

My goals before starting were:

- Not cutting or removing any brackets or child seat anchors from behind the seats
- Not moving the seats forward
- Being able to put the truck back to stock

I decided on a Pioneer TS-SW2501S2 which is a 10 inch sub that has a shallow top mount depth of about 3 inches. The specs say it can handle 300 watts rms. I will be pairing it with an Alpine MRP-M350 which is a monoblock capable of 350 watts rms at 2 ohms.

I removed the back seats and the plastic first, I found this would be the easiest way. It gives a lot of room to work. I used 3/4 inch MDF and #6 1" 5/8 construction screws for the build. I glued all seams with wood glue and after it was together I sealed it with 100% silicone.

I don't have the exact measurements for those who are interested but I will get them if anyone wants. I do know that the inside depth is 6 inches and the inside width is approximately 29 inches. The box goes right up to the brace just below the back window. For airspace it was somewhere in the area of .55 cubic feet.

I didn't take a picture of it inside the truck as I am not satisfied with the amp rack. I will be re-doing it because I didn't leave myself enough space behind for wiring and my distrubution blocks. I plan on having all wiring behind the amp rack and then having holes cut near the terminals of the amps for a cleaner look. The amp rack is secured to the middle brace on the back wall using the stock screws for the plastic.

I will likely get to this when I get my MLV and CCF. As for the sub it does sound nice and is beginning to break in. My initial impressions of this sub is that it is very musical and not a boomy bass like some subs that I have heard. It is extremely tight and can transition from different freqencies very well without being sloppy. It's definetely not something that will blow your hair back but it fills in the low end well. Once it breaks in I will report back and will have pictures of my finished product.

I'm also looking for feedback on how you guys are holding your sub boxes in place behind the seat, things such as brackets etc and where you attached them.

Comments and suggestions welcome...

BTW this took two evenings to complete as I got distracted by my old friend Coors and the hockey game LOL! Plus I didn't feel like slicing a finger after having a few!

 

See, this man knows how to build a box. Plenty of beer and lots of glue and sealant. You can't build a good box without beer....just can't

Looks good OP? Does this setup allow you to leave the rear plastics on the back of the seats where the sub is located?

 

Beer is a must with any project I think, although I did get a little side tracked. I'll get the measurements and post them for those wondering.

EDIT: Aw9d I misread your post earlier. Yes it does allow you to leave the rear plastics behind the seat. I removed mine for the time being as my measurement for the top portion of the box was less than 1/8 inch off so the seat did not want to close without being slammed. I am going to shave a small amount off the corner and it should be fine. The seat goes down all the way without touching the sub.

Not sure if anyone saw it in my long winded post but how is everyone securing their sub boxes? Mine fits tight but I'd like to do a little extra

Mine is very snug too but I went over some really rough road the other day and it rattled a little. I guess a little bit of time and some CCF would fix that.

Yep I put it in last week the box fits great. I'll be making another amp rack so all of the wires are hidden behind and then carpeting the whole thing.

One tweak I'll be making to the box prior to carpeting is sanding the top front edge a little because it hits the plastic behind the seat.

Yes I've got it all hooked up but it's a wiring mess. I think it sounds great. Haven't really pushed it yet though. I still have to set the gains and tweak the crossovers.
