Well of course, but that gets back to the whole argument of whether the TPMS system is even worthwhile given all the frustration and money people in these forums have incurred. That’s why I said “realistic” purpose (opinion). I still need my trusty old pressure gauge to figure which tire is low when the light comes on.

However, I do like the strap idea in considering selling my vehicle down the line. Then at least you can say everything is working properly. Thanks for the info!

Exactly why I decided to keep them. I'd rather not mess with a safety feature, even though the sensor don't really help me at all.

Have an '09 with steel wheel 40 degree tpms sensors installed in TRD Sport alloys, they are working fine for 23k miles, Tire shop turned them to fit somehow. Not sure on the angle of the dangle but alloys sensors have a 20 degree bend. Never looked at the mounting hole on the steelies but I wish I had. The posistion of the mounting hole on the two types of wheels might be different. Here is a good link on the sensors.

My dad and I recently switched wheels and we're having a bit of TPMS problem on his Tacoma.

He has a 2006 that had the 16" TRD OR wheels. Well, he was planning to get new tires, so I arranged to just give him my setup instead for a cheap price. I had the 16" steel wheels with new tires on my Tacoma.

We effectively took off my 16" steel wheel and new tire setup and slapped them on his truck. Then I put new Terra Grapplers on his TRD wheels and put them on my truck. The TPMS is working fine on my truck, as I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary.

However, on his truck, we're seeing the tire pressure icon blink non-stop upon starting the vehicle. I read in the manual that is due to faulty TPMS system or something of that nature. It recommended resetting the system by holding in the "Reset" button underneath the steering column for 3 blinks of the icon. That isn't doing anything though. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. He's going to disconnect the battery for a few minutes today to reset the ECU in hopes of resetting the TPMS. Any other thoughts?

This may be a dumb question, but if all you're worried about is monitoring the spare, what happens if you remove the TPMS from the 4 drive tires and leave it in the spare and reset the system? Will it monitor the spare only or will the light stay on since it's only reading one sensor?

    Anything guys?

He did disconnect the battery yesterday for a while to clear the ECU, to no avail. I'm stumped because the sensors on my truck that were originally on his work fine on my truck. I'm getting no alert. I thought that it may have been due to mixing the sensors between trucks (i.e. My spare matches the four now on his truck. And vice-versa, his spare tire sensor matches the four on my truck right now.).

Another thing to add or reiterate about my post a couple previous to this one.

Would it matter that my dad and I didn't also swap our spare tires with our other 4 wheels? We basically have a mismatch of original TPMS sensors. I wasn't sure if our blinking light was due to having a "mismatched" set or something.

Do all 5 sensors have to remain together?

Your sensors that are on your Dad's truck are programmed into your truck's TPMS ecu & visa versa. Each sensor has an ID code on it. The TPMS ecu has room for 5 codes. Tire shops as well as the dealer have the means for programming the codes into the ecu with a scanner but the codes are stamped on the sensors themselves inside the tire.

I think this why your Dad's system will not reset. It is looking for his sensors codes.....
ncttora has an online service manual that outlines the whole TPMS system if you have questions.

ps they do not have to stay together, but the codes need to go into the right truck.

    Man oh man!

Just spoke to the tire shop (Sun Tire) and Toyota. The shop doesn't have the means of reprogramming the ECU to match the sensors. The stealership charges $50 per vehicle to reprogram the TPMS system.

Me thinks it's time for a small piece of black tape. **rolls eyes**

There is a mod for the 2006s (and other model yrs) where you can ground out or put an inline fuse into the tpms wiring harness. Its documented over at TN or search disable tpms. There are ways around it. Good luck!

Yeah, I saw that thread. Looks like I'll be going that route. I won't be giving $50 per vehicle to fix it. Thanks Jude. ;)

If I were to buy tpms sensors removed from a 2008 Tacoma, would they automatically be tuned to work with my 2010 or would they need to be retuned?

The dealer would need to calibrate them to your truck.
