    My advice is first buy the speakers you want and install them. See what they sound like without an additional amp. This will keep your factory system in place and you have the steering wheel remote still. It also may be just enough power for the small cab.

    If you are looking to use an amp, I unfortunately do recommend a new HU only due to the bass boost I mentioned before as it drives me crazy at times. The alternative is to wire your own pre-amp outputs but since I don't know the circuitry I can't say for certain that there is a spot to tap that. If you want a new HU you need to do your homework on the mounting frames and if you will be able to use the steering wheel controls. For some folks it's not a big deal but I'm use to these things and would hate to give them up.
