In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

Evolution of the United States Flag


No one knows with absolute certainty who designed the first stars and stripes or who made it. Congressman Francis Hopkinson seems most likely to have designed it, and few historians believe that Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, made the first one.

Until the Executive Order of June 24, 1912, neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag was prescribed. Consequently, flags dating before this period sometimes show unusual arrangements of the stars and odd proportions, these features being left to the discretion of the flag maker. In general, however, straight rows of stars and proportions similar to those later adopted officially were used. The principal acts affecting the flag of the United States are the following:

• On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
• Act of January 13, 1794 - provided for 15 stripes and 15 stars after May 1795.
• Act of April 4, 1818 - provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the admission of each new state, signed by President Monroe.
• Executive Order of President Taft dated June 24, 1912 - established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star to be upward.
• Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically.
• Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizon tally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically. http://www.usflag.org/history/flagevolution.html

The Texas Veterans Commission was created in 1927 as the State Service Office to assist veterans of the Indian wars, Spanish-American War and World War I. As when the agency was founded, its purpose today is straightforward: to assist Texas veterans, their families and their survivors in obtaining all the benefits they have earned through their service to our country.

Fund for Veterans’ Assistance

About the Fund

The Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance was created by the 80th Texas Legislature in 2007 to provide aid to veterans and their families in need. The fund is supported by generous donations from individuals and organizations. Additionally, a lottery scratch-off game was created during the 81st Legislative Session to provide a secure revenue stream for the fund.
The Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance makes grants to address a broad range of needs for both veterans and their families, as well as grants to improve veterans’ assistance programs. Qualified charitable organizations, Veterans Service Organizations and local government agencies will receive grants to provide direct assistance to veterans and their families in local communities.
Current Grant Opportunity

The Texas Veterans Commission is pleased to announce the solicitation of Letters of Interest for a TVC Grant from organizations interested in applying for grant funding from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. The Texas Veterans Commission can provide grants ranging in amounts between $10,000 and $1 million.
Applying for grants is a two-step process. First, applicants must submit a Letter of Interest, along with required supporting materials. Organizations with an acceptable Letter of Interest, as determined via objective review criteria, will be invited to submit a grant application.

Advisory Committee

The agency's Commissioners appointed an independent advisory committee consisting of leaders in the veterans, business and communications community to provide planning guidance for the solicitation and distribution of Texas Veterans Commission grants. The advisory committee will evaluate the grant proposals and make recommendations to the Commissioners on how the grants should be awarded.

Applying for a Texas Veterans Commission grant is a two-step process.

Claims Representation and Counseling

The Texas Veterans Commission serves veterans, their dependents and survivors, in all matters pertaining to veterans' disability benefits and rights. It is the designated agency of the State of Texas to represent the State and its veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The agency represents veterans in filing VA disability claims and during VA appeals processes, and assists dependents with survivor benefits.
The State of Texas leads all other large states in monetary recovery of veterans’ compensation and pension benefits. More than $1.5 billion in compensation and pension is distributed each year to Texas veterans and eligible surviving family members represented by the Texas Veterans Commission.


Expert Counselors

The Texas Veterans Commission is nationally recognized for its expertise in helping veterans get the most benefits they are entitled to. The agency has more than 75 claims counselors accredited by the VA to represent veterans with disability claims and appeals. Counselors also help veterans and their families with questions regarding benefits, survivor and dependent needs, filling out VA paperwork, and medical issues.


Where We Are Located

The largest concentration of veterans live near the major cities of Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley. In order to assist these veterans, Texas Veterans Commission claims and benefits counselors are located in VA Regional Offices, VA medical facilities, VA clinics, and military installations throughout the State.

Education


Our goal is to ensure that every military veteran and family member eligible for federal or state veterans’ educational benefits has the opportunity to pursue whatever educational endeavor they choose. Our role is to ensure that quality instruction is provided for every veteran or eligible family member who enters an approved educational or training program in the State of Texas.

Veterans Education staff responsibilities include:

• Serving as a liaison between Texas veterans and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
• Serving as a liaison between school officials, employers, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
• Maintaining a current listing of schools and employers with approved programs on our website
• Conducting outreach to prospective schools/employers in order to expand the training opportunities for Texas veterans and increase the overall usage of State and federal educational benefits
• Investigating VA educational and benefit complaints from veterans and other eligible family members
• Providing information about training and educational opportunities to veterans, military personnel, schools, employers and labor groups
• Providing technical assistance and training to schools and employers in completing applications for approval and VA certification forms for benefits
• Participating in and conducting outreach and liaison activities with veterans’ groups, military installations, schools, and other agencies

Employment

The Texas Veterans Commission offers employment services to Texas veterans and helps employers find qualified veteran job applicants. The goal of these services is to match veteran job seekers with the best employment opportunities available.
Texas leads the nation in veterans’ employment with Texas Veterans Commission employment representatives helping more than 47,500 veterans find employment in 2009. Additionally, the Texas Veterans Commission staff has filled over 500 training slots at the prestigious National Veterans’ Training Institute since 2006 and won 12 national employment awards from both veteran and workforce organizations in 2008 and 2009.

Job Seekers

Over 90 Texas Veterans Commission employment representatives provide a full range of employment services. They are located in more than 75 cities throughout Texas and offer one-on-one assistance to veterans with job applications, resume preparation, job matching and searches, as well as other intensive services.
The Texas Veterans Commission staff in workforce centers also provides intensive services to disabled veterans, economically or educationally disadvantaged veterans, and veterans with other barriers to employment, especially homeless veterans.

Employers

In 2009 the Texas Veterans Commission launched an initiative to enhance and centralize services to employers. The Texas Veterans Commission’s Business Outreach Coordinator works with employers to help them understand the value of hiring qualified veterans who possess numerous unique abilities gained through military service veterans. Additionally, the Texas Veterans Commission provides employers with qualified, pre-screened veteran candidates for employment opportunities. This service is provided at no cost to the employer.

Transition Assistance Program

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is targeted to military service members and their spouses who are preparing to separate from their respective military service. They are conducted at TAP sites in coordination with the Department of Defense.

Family Employment Assistance Counselors

In September 2009, the Texas Veterans Commission began providing employment services to spouses and caregivers of active duty servicemembers. Family Employment Assistance Counselors are placed at Fort Hood, Fort Bliss and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and provide the same services to those spouses and caregivers as they do to veterans.

Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment

The Texas Veterans Commission assigns staff to designated VA facilities to assist disabled veterans with intensive employment assistance. These services are provided to veterans completing their VR&E training or education program and are within 90 days of graduation. Here is more information about applying for VR&E.

REALifelines

This program assists seriously injured who are in the process of being discharged with accessing employment assistance and other related veterans benefits. REALifelines provides immediate intervention and casework support for the veteran. The original Texas Veterans Commission location at San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) was one of only six in the country. The Texas Veterans Commission has expanded REALifelines to both Fort Hood in Killeen and Fort Bliss in El Paso.

What Is VA Disability Compensation?

Disability compensation is a benefit paid to a veteran because of injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, or were made worse by active military service. It is also paid to certain veterans disabled from VA health care. The benefits are tax-free.
Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible for disability compensation if you have a service-related disability and you were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.
How Much Does VA Pay?

The amount of basic benefit paid ranges, depending on how disabled you are.


Note: You may be paid additional amounts, in certain instances, if:

• you have very severe disabilities or loss of limb(s)
• you have a spouse, child(ren), or dependent parent(s)
• you have a seriously disabled spouse

How Can You Apply?


You can apply by filling out VA Form 21-526, Veterans Application for Compensation and/or Pension. If you have any of the following material, please attach it to your application:

Since the days of the Texas Republic, Texas has given its veterans land in recognition of their military service. In the days of Sam Houston, that debt for service was paid to Texas veterans in grants of land. Following World War II, this tradition was continued with the creation of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) in 1946 to administer a new program which would provide low-interest, long-term loans to Texas veterans for the purchase of land. The History of

The Vietnam War POW/MIA Flag


In 1971, Mrs.Mary Hoff, an MIA wife and member of the National League of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia, recognized the need for a symbol of our POW/MIAs. Prompted by an article in the Jacksonville, Florida TIMES-UNION, Mrs. Hoff contacted Norman Rivkees, Vice-President of Annin & Company which had made a banner for the newest member of the United Nations, the People's Republic of China, as a part of their policy to provide flags to all UN member nations. Mrs. Hoff found Mr. Rivkees very sympathetic to the POW/MIA issue, and he, along with Annin's advertising agency, designed a flag to represent our missing men. Following League approval, the flags were manufactured for distribution.
The flag is black, bearing in the center, in black and white, the emblem of the League. The emblem is a white disk bearing in black silhouette the bust of a man, watch tower with a guard holding a rifle, and a strand of barbed wire; above the disk are the white letters POW and MIA framing a white 5-pointed star; below the disk is a black and white wreath above the white motto YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.
Concerned groups and individuals have altered the original POW/MIA Flag many times; the colors have been switched from black with white - to red, white and blue, -to white with black; the POW/MIA has at times been revised to MIA/POW. Such changes, however, are insignificant. The importance lies in the continued visibility of the symbol, a constant reminder of the plight of America's POW/MIA'S. On March 9,1989, a POW/MIA Flag, which flew over the White House on the 1988 National POW/MIA Recognition Day, was installed in the United States Capitol Rotunda as a result of legislation passed overwhelmingly during the 100th session of Congress. The leadership of both Houses hosted the installation ceremony in a demonstration of bipartisan congressional support. This POW/MIA Flag, the only flag displayed in the United States Capitol Rotunda, stands as a powerful symbol of our national commitment to our POW/MIAs until the fullest possible accounting for Americans still missing in Southeast Asia has been achieved.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May.
Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.

HP Printer



This soldier in Iraq had an HP printer which quit working. He contacted HP tech support for help to fix it.

HP told the soldier that he would have to pay them for the advice. Watch this 60 second video for his response to them.

Hopefully, somewhere an HP VP or executive is looking for a job.

the dimensions of the flag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet






wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions, as described in Executive






Order #10834. This Flag is 6.65 acres and is the first Floral Flag to be






planted with 5 pointed Stars, comprised of White Larkspur. Each Star is






24 feet in diameter; each Stripe is 30 feet wide. This Flag is estimated to






contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants, with 4-5 flower stems each,






for a total of more than 2 million flowers.
