Toyota U.S. hybrid sales surpass million mark

Toyota's hybrid sales in the U.S. have surpassed the 1 million mark, the Japanese automaker said Thursday, underlining the rising popularity of the ecological vehicles.
It took seven years for Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, to sell 500,000 hybrids in the U.S., but has taken just two years to sell the next 500,000, the Japanese company said in a statement.

Toyota, who also makes the Camry and Corolla sedans, introduced gasoline-electric hybrids to Japan in 1997, and the U.S. in July 2000, with its Prius. The Prius is still the world's top-selling hybrid.
"One million hybrids in less than nine years indicates how quickly American consumers have accepted this important technology," Jim Lentz, Toyota's top U.S. executive, said in a statement.
Toyota controlled nearly 75 percent of the U.S. hybrid market over the past decade, and cumulative worldwide sales of the company's Prius and luxury Lexus hybrids topped 1.7 million vehicles through January.
Toyota has sold 700,000 Prius cars in the U.S., more than half the 1.2 million sold worldwide.

Pretty impressive. My wife inherited an old prius from her Dad when he passed away. Its one of the old ones that look like a Nissan Sentra. The car is insanely complicated and it took me a long time just to figure out how to work on it. That said, its been reliable and realistically gets around 50MPG, which with our commute is a good thing. Ya- I know people basically pass em' off as hippy cars, but what the hell- it works great.

They are hippy cars, but they do work great.
My neibor's wife has one and it has been a great car for them. She does almost all of her driving in-town, which is where a hybrid is ideal.

Our carbon footprint compensation is a Camry Hybrid. I couldn't be more pleased with the car. (t is a night and day difference from the Prius in ride and quiet but not as good mileage, but it consistantly beats the mileage rating on the window sticker. A weekend out on the outerbanks will deliver over 40mph. Running down the Interstate at 70 the mileage drops to 36-37. It stays in that range in around town driving.

They did a good job on this car.
