1st Time Buyer Advice Please

I intend to buy a used 4Runner and I would like some advice from you current owners.

Pros/Cons of 1st gen vs 2nd gen 4Runners (and what year did they change)?

Is there any truth to my being told that 2001 was the last year for trucks that are somehow superior to those that followed?

Is there really any noticeable mileage difference between 2wd and 4 wd 4Runners? Or between the 6cyl and 4 cyl engines?

Anything else you might think I should know?
