Rhode Island title question

I am trying to buy a car from a friend. Currently registered in Rhode island but located in Va. The titling was in RI cause homeboy lived there for a while and had a suspended license so he put in in a roommates name.

Well, come to find out (and I knew this before) that RI doesn't give titles for cars over a certain age (10yrs?) So nobody has a title to this car.

I searched the RI dmv site and didn't see anything about buing a car with no title from RI and taking it elseware....I did see you could buy/register a car within RI with simply a BOS.

The car is in Va and the deal is too good to pass up so I really want it.
Any ideas?

 

Call DMV in VA, where you'll be registering the vehicle. You might have to pay to have the car re-titled. VA uses electronic titles also so they might be able to dig up the old title with a Bill of Sale and the VIN. You're best bet is to call the DMV office in the state you want to register the truck in and find out what hoops you'll have to jump through.
