lol all nutz, if you don't know don't drive it on the blacktop, if your competent knock yourself out.

I drive my truck in 4x4 on pavement, I avoid turning or make turns as an 18wheeler would very wide and I am prepared well before. I don't care what others think, good or bad as stated many times in this thread Its our trucks do as you wish. At the end of the day you as the owner have to live with the truck. So I say again if you comprehend what is going on feel free to drive it on the pavement if you so choose, if you have some concerns play it safe and don't engage 4wd on the black top.

I don't ever need to. I choose to. I do lots of things I don't need to do. There is nothing wrong with having 4wd engaged while driving in a straight line on any surface. I don't get a chance to wheel frequently, I choose to exercise my actuator frequently and its rarely offroad.

Do I think everyone should do what I do certainly not. But at the end of the day its their trucks and in all honesty if you operate the vehicle properly while in 4wd there is no detrimental affects. When done incorrectly there can be severe consequences. I'm not here to decide which person is competent enough to use their vehicles but I can state facts about their 4wd systems. Some people can ruin 2wd's with improper use.

Its real simple, you don't want to drive in 4wd on pavement then don't. Can I? Certainly.

I drive mine on the pavement at least 10 miles per month as the manual states. I just do it on a rainy day and don't take any REAL sharp turns. Been doing that for 6 years now. Just sayin'........

Well, i guess living 10 minutes from hundreds of miles of dirt roads does have a few advantages....i forget sometimes that there are areas so built up that finding a dirt road is hard for some. Every artical i've read on part-time 4wd though warns against engaging it on dry pavement and that damage can occur. Can anyone provide a link to some information that states otherwise?

I dont think anybody can. The fact is front and rear are hard connected to eachother. So there is not much slack. Once you engage that thing on dry pavement it will try to stretch the chain in transfer case. Unless somebody goes to extreme and figures out how to Even out front and rear rotations. So engaging 4x4 on dry pavement should be avoided if possible. That does not mean TC will explode immediately but it will wear out eventually.
P.S. for those that say I did that on 1gen well first gens came with 4.10 gears so TC did not have to work as hard.

It will bind just the same no matter what the gearing is. Many have tried turning a part time into a viable full time AMC tried a vicious drive GM put a spider gear set in the rear output it did not work out well for them. Yes chain stretch is an issue you may have to replace it at 300 or 400 hundred thousand miles. The only thing I am saying is don't be afraid to occasionally drive on the pavement in 4 wheel drive when it's slick use it that is why you have it don't panic if you come to dry pavement for a few miles the case will out last the truck.
