    Forget plywood if you plan on any drawing or writing. This is what I used on my drafting tables. Flexible and with a couple of pieces of 2-sided tape, removable for dirtier jobs.

    getting there....
    Thin plexiglass sheet from Lowes......have them cut it for you. Install with a spray adesive or something similar.

    Put a piece of formica on the top. Draw on it, whatever with a pencil. Use a rag with water to clean it. If the water doesn't get it laquer thinner will. That's what we cleaned all our formica tops with after we installed them.

    actually lowes does sell the white board stuff, (well at least at the lowes i work at) it is new so some stores may not carry it
