Old Tires as a backdrop?

I got some old tires and I may have found a use for them? What if I put them in my backyard stacked up and fill them with gravel? Cause it's abundantly available..... Or would I need dirt?

Good idea or not?

 

fill the tires with dirt, instead of gravel. Depending on what your shooting at them?

 

dirt would be best.

 

What about sand?

 

As long as its not gravel I think you would be ok

 

I'm not sure but the tire's being steel belted and all, you might get ricochets from small arms such as .22's.

 

hickock45 uses old tires and my local range's shoot house uses 3/4" plywood boxes filled with 3/4"-1" gravel as a back stop for CQC.

 

Plant potatoes in them, they grow like crazy up here in Canada with the short growing season.

 

Get a 1/4 - 1/2" mesh screen at a Home Depot or Lowes and screen the large rocks out of the gravel when you shovel it in (put the screen on top of the tires when you fill them). That way you have a loose sand-like material and you don't have to buy a bunch of fill.

 

I shot in a local police shoot house that used tires for the walls. They simply put a stack of 8 or 9 tires around a 4x4 post planted in the ground and filled the inside with concrete.

I think the little bit of air space between tire and concrete allowed the bullet to pass through the tire then strike the concrete and either fragment or lose enough energy that the tire would stop a bullet from exiting the tire.
