Ignition problems

My wife's truck will not start. Engine turns over fine, all the ECM and ignition fuses and relays are good. Fuel system seems to be working. I assume my 4cyl engine has some cam position sensors for igntion timing signals to the ECM. Where are they? Any way to quick test if that is my problem or if i have ECM problems. HELP!

 

Not to sound elementary but when you're cranking the engine do you smell fuel ? Maybe pull a spark plug wire and be certain you have fire.

 

yes, I smell fuel, and no there is no fire. That is why I started to look at the ignition module or it's sensors. I got air and fuel, now I need igntion. I would assume the ignition will not turn on until it knows position. Correct?

 

Correct, when you don't have fire, something is not allowing it to no it's position (sensor) or the unit has gone bad.

Is your fuel pump working? Do you hear it? Check the fuse for your fuel pump.
Your Cam sensor should have 12v, ground and signal wire, so check with a voltmeter if your 12v and your ground are ok. To check the signal given by a cam sensor, you need a scope so unless you have a very good voltmeter (Fluke, etc...) you can't read the cam signal.
It is a situation that can have many causes so it is extremely hard to diagnose.
To make sure you have gaz coming to your engine, disconnect your entry line and crank the engine, if gas is coming out you're ok.

Thanks for the help although I had checked the fuel at the entry line and all that works when I turn the engine over. I have a fluke but I can't find the cam sensor, which was my original question. Where is it? I assume this is a hall effect sensor and will go 12v signal low when the signal passes the sensor. By the way, where is the ECM?

 

i believe ecm in in behind the glove box or down under stereo...been awhile since i had one that was stock gutted.. did you check if you have 12v going into the coils? if it doesnt get any there then it wont get any to plugs...I had a postition sensor go out on mine once... but it still ran... just back fired and such .....also that was on v6 but I think the sensor is right infront of oil filter location...has weather tight connector with 3 wires maybe if memory is correct

 

Just wondering if you got this problem sorted out. My truck currently will not start and I have done almost all the checks that I can with my multimeter and Haynes manual.
