tuning supercharger... all sorts of headaches

Hey, having some serious issues. Got a 98 taco with a black charger(second gen) that is falling on its face/cutting out. I can't even get it over 80mph. The previous owner just put the charger on 20,000 miles ago. Check engine light on since. It wasn't doing this when I bought it. I have done all the dumb little stuff like fuel filter and plug wires. Owner said it needed tuned bad, never had been. It has the urd 6 injector kit with the piggyback computer . It's on 33" bfgs and I only get 11.5 mpg........ I just need to know how to tune it. I can plug it into a laptop. Just need to know what software to run/ parameters to set fuel delivery and timing. ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!

 

First, do you have an AFR gauge?

What are the codes for the Check Engine Light?

Are you running the same type of spark plugs that you had before, but new ones. Or did you install new colder plugs?

If you cannot see the AFR(Air Fuel Ratio) you are going blind.

 

okay im ordering an afr gauge. Urd has about a million options. Which one is the right set up? the mtx-L kit is what im leaning towards but I honestly cant tell the difference between most of them. Just want an accurate reading and a set up that will last. Im going to have to wait untill monday to get the code for the check engine light read. There denzo irridums, the ones that came with the charger originally. I looked at them when i did the wires and they appeared in good shape. I plan to replace them when I get the tune on the pickup. I didnt want to spend 75 bucks on plugs then mess them up with my shi**y tune.

 

I have the codes. there were 5 of them... strangly the first code and the last code are the exact same thing...

P0141 o2 heater circut (bank1, sensor 2)

P0133 o2 circut slow response (bank 1, sensor1)

P0130 o2 circut (bank 1, sensor 1)

P0171 System too lean (bank 1)

P0141 o2 heater circut ( bank 1, sensor 2)

Now at this point I think I should replace both o2 sensors.Good plan?

 

aloso I have no Cat so im investing in the urd rear sensor simulator. There is no DEQ where I live but I want rid of this stupid check engine light. This seems like the only way to fool the rear o2 sensor.

 

Here is the AFR gauge which I prefer. Easiest to install, and doesn't have to be calibrated.

They also offer clamp on AFR exhaust bungs, if you don't feel like having a bung welded in.

If you enter the part number on www.Amazon.com, you will find a much better price.

The URD O2 simulator will get rid of the no cat check engine lights, but won't help with the lean code. That will be from tuning. Need more fuel. Right now, you are most likely pinging. Not safe.

I don't think you need to replace any sensors just yet though.

 

Okay I ordered one this morning. I have multiple welders and weld almost daily so that won't be a problem .

The only thing that bothers me is if my milage abruptly dropped from 16 to 11.5 then a month later the thing starts sputtering. How is that lean? I assumed for the last month that I was running way way to rich in order to achieve 11.5 mpg .... Which still makes me think at least one o2 sensor must be screwy.

You are welcome. I only mention the lean scenario, due to the code you listed. From what you say, your tune is all over the place.

 

185,000. No they have not. I honestly dont think it is pinging. All you can hear is the whine of the charger. when in 5th gear low rpm it just sputters. It really acts like its a clogged fuel filter. not like one cylinder is missing but all of them are starving.

Also i notice that when I first start it the exhaust smells like exhaust but then after about a minute or two it really smells rich. Idle doesnt change.

I ordered a new o2 sensor for the front. It should be here before saturday.

my only problem with all this blaming the "tune" is it ran fine a week ago. Im sure the horrible tune definatly caused the problem. but I still feel like im missing something. ... I hate being out of a daily driver too! haha so I wann get this figured out asap!

 

I replaced the front or upstream o2 sensor today and the truck is back to normal. 100% cured! Thank you to everyone who helped ! I really do appreciate it! When i recieve my afr gauge I will start a different thread about tuning, cause this thing needs it. I'm also curious to see my mpgs now.Thanks again!!!
