From someone who's lived in Portland all 30+ years of my life, I say the Portland Metro Area, likely on the west side of Portland...

Bend is a 3 hr drive from Portland d, and its nice and all, but I personally be semi-bored after a weekend or so... maybe I'm going down there with the wrong people but that's just me. The nice thing about the Portland Metro area is you're not much more than 3 hrs from anything.... be it the coast and beaches, the mountains and skiing, the Ducks down in Eugene (or the Beavers in Corvallis, the that's your thing :) ), Bend for a weekend (including Smith Rock for climbers and hikers) or even a Seattle weekend getaway... Portland has a pretty decent night life, micro-brew capital of the world, last time I checked (I don't drink beer but know that we're one of the best for sure) and more things to do than I care to type out on a phone keyboard...

Climate in Portland is mild, and even somewhat predictable, even if it is a lot of rain, but to me that's a good thing... no waking up to sudden snow storms and no trying to sleep in triple digit heat

...traffic is terrible, you live in the middle of 4 interstates
people are hippy hipster elitists who will camp on your front lawn to protest your emissions, yet pay $6 for black coffee farmed by slaves and imported by an Enron barge ship
east side is sketchy and dumpy
    do you like the homeless?
welcome to emissions testing if you don't already have it
bikes have the right of way at all times. This means buses, rail cars, and trains must stop for them.
You are entitled to your own opinion, just so long as it doesn't offend anyone else.

TurboGT is absolutely right with his description of Portland as well, but there's two sides to the coin. Portland is like Disneyland. It's great to visit, but you really don't want to see how Snow White and Mickey earn their extra cash.

im from the 808 and have lived up here for 7 years...don't move up here!!! the sun shines maybe 90 days out of the entire year. it rains...rains...and rains, but if you're down for all of that then go right ahead. they call the beaches here the beach, but it's nothing like the beaches in hawaii. its typically blowing 50 plus mph and cold as hell lol. the cost of living is much cheaper and the people are super friendly and laid back for the most part. i would recommend you moving to salem for the wife because they have a pretty nice hospital...but i heard as an RN you make more money working on oahu then at the hospitals up here...and i am sure that will probably even out with the cost of living and other things.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
If you want the outdoors, and great year round weather (think 4 different seasons)... I would try Prineville. The community is growing and you are close enough to Bend and everything else in that area. My mom grew up there, and it is also home of Les Schwab. Personally, I am from the Salem/Silverton area and would NEVER move back into that area. Lots of reasons for it.

My dad used to be, I still know most of the laws. Whats up? Also, you can PM Toyota Man, he is a reserve officer around the Monmouth area.
