I'm a volunteer fire fighter where I live and I'm thinking about getting a HAM radio for my truck. From what I can tell there are quite a few different antennas out there.

    Any recomendations?

I ran a 2M /440 5/8 with a NMO mount on the middle of my DC roof. It has worked out very well. If you are afraid of drilling, you might try a window mount on the rear window, although this is not optimal.
