1995.5 Antifreeze type

Okay, as always I overthink things, but want to put what is supposed to be in the truck so it reacts correctly with the internals. Drained the radiator and block to replace an expansion plug (ended up it was not leaking) and now need to refill. Did a search, but did not find the info I was looking for. Mostly stuff on leaks, heaters etc.

March 1995 build date, 3.4L so very early first production truck.

No original tags anywhere for type of coolant (radiator has been changed by previous owner).

Called Valvoline as I'd used their Zerex Asian Antifreeze previously in an 05 Camry. The bottle I have has a crude year gridded chart on it that isn't very scientific to say the least. Anyway, closest grid line is 1996. Could not tell where the cut off was where they say it went from the Zerex
G-05 type to the Zerex Asian Antifreeze. According to the CS person I talked to they say it uses the G-05 antifreeze. This the gold bottle one and is a yellow type colour. He said that 1997 is when he shows it changes and to use the Zerex Asian antifreeze.

When I looked at their info on the G-05 seems mostly geared toward Chrysler vehicles with a generic mention of Toyota.

Called the Toyota dealer and talked to the parts guy. He says it uses the Toyota Long Life Red.

Looking at the stuff I drained it isn't too helpful. Looks a sort of orangy/pinkish/redish colour. Sort of like the colour of the grapfruit juice you can buy at the store.

So anyone have the factory tag or marking still that says?

What Antifreeze is supposed to be in the 1995?

I use the Red Toyota antifreeze in both my Tacomas.

Red it is then. Just concerned with the early build of the truck if it was something different. Thanks for the posts.

 

Many will say that you NEED to run Toyota red....but I have ran Prestone high life green for the entire time I have has the truck. But if you switch between colors make sure you flush the radiator and the block well do you don't hace any mixing problems

 

Thanks for the post. Received similar response on the green. Seems like it all comes down to maintenance. Change it regularly and people don't seem to have an issue with it. Just was doing reading on some brand types that supposedly have issues with internal components/waterpump seal etc. so got me to looking at it more closely.

What with the semi close colour of the stuff that came out of the truck I went ahead and picked up some of the Toyota Long Life red. Dealers here are owned by the same owner and give full suggested list on every part at the parts departments.

Was sniffing about online looking at the red replacements and found that CarQuest stocks the gen Toyota red. The are closer to boot so picked it up there and saved about $4 on the gallon (plus the extra fuel to get to the dealer).
