I was talking to a service Tec at Toyota in a big city and he told me that the drain and fill plugs were "pressed on" and I would have to take it to a machine shop to remove???

    I have a 99 rear drive only SR5 PreRunner

What grade of gear oil is best? And where do I buy it?

On one of rear wheels the diff fluid is leeking on the rim of the wheel.
Can I add some as I have to drive 600mi next day.

    None yet.....
So just so I get this right, if I have the TRD Off-Road package and not the Sport Package, do I still need to add LSD additive to the rear diff when I change the fluid?

Also, is it GL-4 or GL-5 fluid that should be used in the diffs/t-case/manual tranny? I've seen both listed in different places.

I just tried this service for the first time, following the thread exactly. My rear diff took about another 1/2 quart more than the stated 3 before it started to leak out the fill hole. Is there any reason for this? Is there such a thing as adding too much fluid?

Sorry to repeat the question. I just saw this. What is the harm in putting too much? I just added a little more before reading this.

Should I drain off the extra 1/2 qt. before driving?

Too much oil can cause the oil to cavitate in the differential which could lead to overheating and burning up the gears.

I drained off the extra that I put in, but then driving today, i swear that the truck feels sluggish and heavy. Is it possible that this is related? Or am i being paranoid?

x2, but I believe I read where someone stated for the '09 and up don't need the LSD additive b/c the brakes are used as the LSD instead of the clutches

I just did all my fluids this weekend at 30k. The fluid itself looked half decent but it sure smelled like ass. And the drain plugs magnets had a lot of sludge caked on to them. I noticed the transfer case didn't have a magnet though, I wonder why. I also noticed of all the fluids drained that the tcase and the tranny fluid looked the cleanest.

In my manual it reads 2WD models except Prerunner get 3.66 qt.....4WD models and Prerunners get 3.12 qts.....for the people on here putting in 3.5 qts.....maybe the truck is not a prerunner....2cents

Obviously keeping up on the fluids is a good thing. But if you have not changed the fluid in a very long time.. Ahem!.. about 75,000 miles. Would you notice any change in the drivability?

When I changed mine out at 50,000, I noticed a pretty big difference. But I also had a 6 speed so the biggest thing I noticed was easier shifts lol. Can't hurt to change it.

You only have the LS Diff if you have the LS Diff sticker on the back of the diff.

Go with Mobile 1.... a lot of people use it. I've used it in multiple different vehicles including my 96 and my 2007.
