Changing battery with a 9 volt settings keeper

hi guys,
had my 2001 V6 4x4 Taco truck for 7 years, best vehicle I've ever had in terms of trouble free. 131,000 miles, and it runs and drives like it did when it had 40,000 on it.
This truck is a 5 speed, no power windows/doors, no ABS, or traction control,

I do all the normal maint, work like plugs, wires, brakes, oil/diff, etc

I want to swap in a new battery soon to prepare for the New Hampshire winters, and I don't want to reset the computer's OBD2 drive Cycle and have to deal with any potential fallout. Right now, the CEL is off, no pending codes.

I bought a "settings keeper" that can use either a 9 volt battery (or another 12volt car battery via small clips) by plugging into the power ports.

Has anyone used one of these, and what was the result?
Any danger of frying the PCU with that?

Welcome to TW, Jason! I've never used a "settings keeper" on my truck, but I have changed the battery and done various other jobs during which I've disconnected the battery. I don't recall ANY ill-effects from doing so.

 

Me too. I've probably changed 50 batteries in my life, and not once did I notice anything go wrong on startup. Hmm, I didn't know there was a risk?

To avoid loosing the ECU, radio, alarm, or clock settings, I use a 12 volt battery jumped in parallel.
