1st gen gear oil

I'm building an Amsoil order for my '97 4wd Tacoma and am planning to use Severe Gear 75w-110 from front to rear. The only potential problem I see is with the transmission. I could order something different for the tranny, but I'd prefer to keep it simple if possible, rather than have partial bottles left over.

Has anyone used Ams 75W-110 in a Tacoma 5spd? I've read about the shifting glitch between 1st and 2nd gear. Since every gear oil is different, this is kind of a gamble unless someone here already has experience with this brand and weight.

Also, my '97 is old enough to call for GL4 rather than GL5 lube requirements. I realize I'm coloring outside the lines here, but is there really anything wrong with using the updated lube specs? I'm assuming my '97 is GL4 because that was the most current at the time. Right?

It looks like maybe I'll be the one giving feedback to everyone else then. I'm placing the order tomorrow, and changing the oil in a week or two.

 

any particular reason you are gonna use 75w 110???

 

btw......its heresay, as i have heard before, but gl5 in the first gens can mess with the snychros............i've only heard that tho.

 

I'm going with 75w-110 just 'cause I'm hoping for a little more shear strength and wear protection than the

$28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 provides. I fully intend for my Tacoma to die after I do, so I drive and maintain accordingly.

Thanks for the feedback about synchros and GL5 oil. I'd read that somewhere also, but don't know if it's a common problem, or just some trannys and some brands of oil. I've heard Redline MT-90 is supposed to be pretty good, so I may buy some if the Amsoil doesn't work.

What did you find out about the AmsOil in the tranny? I'm thinking of trying it in my '98 standard tranny. any wierd noises or problems? I have 237,000 miles on this truck and its been maintained very well throughout its life, tho im not sure what type of fluid is in the tranny now... I don't wanna start messing things up now...
