I have a AVS hood protector...couldn't tell ya if it protects anything but I like the look. Judging by the number of trucks with fake hood scoops function doesn't really matter to most people. I guess if you like the look of the hood protector who cares if it actually works or not.

Anyone in the South (Gulf states primarily) is familiar with "love bugs." They come out twice a year (spring and fall) literally in clouds along the highway and wreak havoc on your paint if left for more than a day or two. Their guts are very acidic and etch chips into your paint if you don't wash them off relatively quickly. The leading edges of a high percentage of cars in the South have these paint chips. I have found that bug deflectors work as advertised, and have installed them on every vehicle I've owned. I am still amazed, however, at Toyota's poor design that puts only a thin layer of 3M clear vinyl tape between the metal brackets and the hood's paint! I can see those vinyl tabs peeling back on my truck, but I'm afraid to remove the deflector to inspect for any paint damage!

Yeah I got my AVS Bugshield cause I liked the look but IMHO it does seem to keep some of the bugs off of my windshield. Usually when I drive at night my windshield would get covered by insect guts but after the bugshield went on the amount of bug guts seems to have decreased.

Wondering if anyone out there has installed the OEM hood protector on their 2012 and can offer pics or opinions?

    This just in!!!

After three long years of protecting my scooped hood from the elements, I took off my AVS hood protector (just because) and found NO PAINT LOSS around the hood front edge. The only ding on the hood is from a rock chip that I got two days before putting it on. Expect I'll have a few more before long.

    Just sayin...

If it uses metal mounting brackets, don't buy it.

I ordered the oem hood protector yesterday. Last night I read all the nightmares people have been having with the oem hood protector. So I decided to ask for a refund, which is a no-no with special orders. They tried to tell me I couldn't get my money back, when I never really picked it up, they still had it. After showing the assistant manager pics of damaged Taco hoods from this forum and looking over that installation parts, he agreed that there's a problem with the design. He gave me my money back and put in a complaint for me with Toyota. THANKS TacomaWorld.com

I will just have my brother-in-law redo the hood once it's needed. Benefits of bro-on-law owning a body shop. :)
