    I was struck by the contrast in the photos also. That *is* a cool old pic.

    But I'm not so sure about the blasting... 80 years of California winters, and the associated cracking, heaving, and rockfalls... That totally looks like a natural progression to me. Paved roads through the canyons stay the way they are because Caltrans are out there all the time clearing rockfalls, repaving holes, shoring up sidecuts, etc...
