Well then I guess you really don't like the statistic that says you or a member of your family has a greater lifetime chance of being hurt by your own firearms than being a victim of a violent crime.

I'm not saying don't own guns. Hell own as many as you want. But making you FEEL safer and actually making you safer are very different things. Check out the book "Culture of Fear" sometime.

This is not meant to start a dick measuring contest, just some questions. If this comes across as a dickhead post just let me know, I dont mean for it to.
I have done no urban fighting, or fired a shot in anger. Have you? How much would one of those guns cost you? More than 179.00? Would you want a person buying their first gun to own something like that? He is trying to convince his wife to buy a gun, if she is anything like my wife, he needs to keep it looking mundane as possible. Hell if he is going to get that might as well tell him to go buy a saiga 12 and chop it. Then he could put a 20 round drum on it and cut his house in 1/2. Forget the pie.
I was taught to keep my rifle @ low ready, if they try to push the barrel down, shoot the ahole in the foot.

The OP shouldn't be slicing any pies or doing any urban fighting

That's a good way to get yourself hurt or killed

i think the premise of what the.sight.picture was posting about room clearing (slicing the pie) is worth pointing out: this is a technique to use IF you must clear rooms... it IS extremely dangerous, but it is what it is... you can do this w/ pistol, slice the pie, looking down the sights until you get too close to the pivot point and must "drop-out" into the hallway/room/etc.. that is the technique i learned, and when you slice try to keep as far away from the pivot as possible - minimizes suddent movement that could tip off BG around the corner (simple geometry) - if you do it right, they won't see you until you "drop-out" on them....

your best bet is to hunker down behind cover in a safe room, call for help, prepare defensive posture - only one way for them to come in - through the door...

You sound smart enough to use statistical data without hurting yourself.

Go to the CDC site and look up the master cause of death by year index.

IIRC, by a pretty far ahead chunk, suicide leads the gunshot wounds deaths at 18000 and change for 2009 (the most recent fully tabulated year)

Thus, statistically, you're much more likely to blow your own brains out than kill an intruder in self defense.

"... and if you like to drink your whiskey, you might even shoot yourself" -- Lynard Skynard

I do NOT agree with the sentiment that we should ban guns to prevent suicides. I merely point out how the anti-gun lobby reads a commonly available statistic.

i don't know what the "real" data is offhand, ..but let's assume you're right for a second...

    1) trying to make a meaningul statistic to the premise of: if you own guns, X is more likely than Y to happen to you is pure B.S. why, because you are not looking at discrete random variables here, but weighted variables - the only way this would make sense is if suicide is a spontaneous random occurence, rather than an occurence that is based on a "predisposition"... so, statistically you can put lipstick on BS, ...it's still BS...

    2) what about all of the gun uses that result in neither X, nor Y (i.e. neither suicide or self defense, ...)? guess what, there's no data for it - it doesn't make the evening news! millions of gunowners, billions of rounds fired every year... i have a feeling that would paint a much different picture...

    1. See gun you like and buy it.
    2. Hide it until the next Ducks Unlimited Dinner, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Dinner, or whatever outdoor dinner you choose where they raise money by raffling off guns.
    3. Buy a couple raffle tickets and enjoy the dinner.
    4. Come home with "new" gun showing it off and brag about how you won it in the raffle.

Wife thinks I am the luckiest sumbitch alive :)

    But that's just it. Exactly.

I come to TW to have discussions, and you apparently come looking to keep score.

My original comment about statistics was at face value -- you seem smart enough to look up source data and analyze it, and draw conclusions from it.

    'night.

No i do not feel you are being a dickhead. this is simply a " my opinion, your opinion". When it comes to my life, i do wat i feel is best. as i expect you do the same. the answers are in red.

1.I have done no urban fighting, or fired a shot in anger. Have you? unfortunatly so
    2.More than 179.00? Yes
3.He is trying to convince his wife to buy a gun, if she is anything like my wife, he needs to keep it looking mundane as possible. It was in response to someone regarding the ATF federal Stamp, and the ATF confusing shotgun pistol grip handgaurd rule.
4.Forget the pie. No sir, i will not when entering a room. if there is any inkling of someone knowledgeable of my presence.
5.I was taught to keep my rifle @ low ready. if its at the low ready when u walk into a room. where ppl are waiting for you, i will NEVER give them a chance to aquire me as a target befor I them.
6.if they try to push the barrel down, shoot the ahole in the foot. they can still return fire and are still an active target. it is a non lethal shot.
7.Hell if he is going to get that might as well tell him to go buy a saiga 12 and chop it. Then he could put a 20 round drum on it and cut his house in 1/2. multiple answer to this one.
1.altering a shotgun barrell below 18 inches i belive is illegal without a fed stamp.
    2. blindly firing thoughout a home, apartment or any inhabited area without proper identification of a target has more than a few moral, and legal ramifications that i have no intention of telling anyone to do. The whole point of identifaction of your target is thown out the window. Take out bad guys. Not kids
    3. saiga 12s are nice. but they arnt MODULAR. The whole point is that it is modular.

    MY opinion:D

Dear god how the hell is this man gonna get his wife to let him buy a gun? I haven't read the bull shit but will say that all gun accidents were and are preventable, gun safety is no accident. I personally feel much more comfortable with my Glock .40 within arms length of me, at all time preferably but right now it isn't an option, that's the way I've been since I first shot a gun. Whomever brought up the idea of sweeping rooms that is the best way to get killed with your own gun, leave that to the pros who are wearing body armor and have many hours of training in situations such as that. In the event of an intruder gtfo your shit isn't worth killing over nor being killed over, your life and families lives are a different story, but better yet call the cops so that they can catch the crooks red handed because a man with a badge has a better reputation and a better chance of things going his way in court than a man with a gun.
