What CB should I get? I want a small sized one, but good enough range to reach a friend across town. And not too tall of an antenna.

Cobra 19 or Uniden 520xl are smaller radios but don't skimp on the antenna with these. General rule with antennas is the taller and higher on the vehicle the better. Check out Wilson magnet mount antennas. They are no fuss and perform great.

Now I need to decide on an antenna. I want a 3' antenna. Preferably a black one and low price.

Your best bet is to look into a Firestick. But I would recomend at least a 4' to start with. You might have to go taller or shorter to get your swr's right.

Okay. I'm looking at the cobra 19 DXIV and I don't really want a tall antenna.

If you're swr's arent good then your radio wont put out good at all and will end up damaging your radio. When your swr's are high instead of the power going out of the antenna a lot of it is going back into your radio slowly killing it. Sometimes you have to go to a different size coax or different size antenna to get it right.

Don't skimp on the antenna with that 19. The antenna is the most important part of the set-up.

i had a conra 19 with a 4 foo firestik and it was great for what you need. I has the antenna tunred and also get the radio peaked and tuned as well and you cant go wrong. In my tacoma i went with the cobra 18 this time becuase I wanted the weatherband and not the PA system. That is the only difference between the two. Just make sure you have you antenna and radio tuned to get the most out of the setup.

uniden 520 with a k-40 antenna, believe me this thing rocks!
and to tweak it just perfect you have to loosen the allen key were the antenna mounts and you have to space it the thikness of a dime from the lowest point of were it sits

This is how my CB is set up on and in my truck. I built into the lower part of the dash. and I have the dual antennas as well. Pretty easy install I think if your good with a drill.

They are alright for the trails. You're not going to talk very far. Maybe 2 or 3 miles.

The one in the link will be fine for trails. You would have to go with cobra or something that you can peak and tiber to get more power out of to talk further. Just trail riding though that one should be good enough

All radios out of the box are going to run 4 watts. If there is a cb shop around you, you can have them get the most power out of it which will help you get some extra range out of it. I have a HAM radio that out of the box I think was pushing 20 watts and after getting it peaked and tuned it now runs 57 watts. I can talk on average for about 10 miles or so on a good day. maybe a little more. Your power output and antenna is what gets you your range. And dont forget to get your SWRs checked. That plays a big role in how far you can talk as well.
