Cancer on wheels, can it be fixed?

I've got an 07 double cab i just bought. all 4 wheels have bubbling issues. the dealer told me that there must be pinholes in the finish which caused water to get under the finish and make it bubble. they said they could do nothing about it due to my 65,000 miles. i'm wondering after reading all these wheel painting threads, can i sand, or sandblast, the wheels and either paint them myself or get them powder coated, and still have a quality finish?? i'm really trying to not have to purchase new wheels. any ideas or solutions would be great.

Sand then paint/powdercoat. It'll be cheaper painting them yourself.

Honestly yours are not that bad yet. You can easily get those power coated.

Some have been lucky enough to complain to Toyota directly and to their dealer so they would refinish them even out of warranty. Best of luck.

 

When mine goes in for warranty work I'm going to mention the wheels to them as mine have the same problem

 

so assuming i get them powder coated, i do need to sand them down first correct? or does that process strip them?

 

Usually the powdercoater will want them sandblasted first

 

If this is your DD you may think twice about powder coating your wheels as you will probably be without them for a few days. You're also going to have to get the wheels broken down as they won't powder coat them with the tires on. It will look great when done though. I just had my yz250's frame and wheels done and they look amazing. If that's not an option, check your local yellow pages for a company that does wheel repair. We have a guy that comes out to our dealership once a week that refinishes wheels that are curbed and bubbling. They sand them, refinish them, paint them, and clearcoat them on site. they look brand new when they're done. They would probably charge around $60-$80 per wheel.

 

You say you just bought it? When? It does come with a used warranty. If they sold it to you with bubbled wheels, then go fine for new ones

 

yeah, well 3,000 mile powertrain warranty through a ford dealership which is already expired. the local toyo dealer said there was nothing they could do with it having 65,000 on it.

 

has anyone heard of or had any luck with the duplicolor wheel paint? it seems pretty legit and i figure i could save ALOT of money this way. heres a link to a video about it.

if those are aluminum alloy wheels after you remove the corrosion then you need to alodine it or the corrosion will come back. . then prime or powder coat. lot of work actaully may be cheaper to get new ones. my 2
