hmm I think I chose mine at a young age when my dad took me to my first air show at an Air Force base and thought to myself, aviation it is! Had some medical issues at 18 that killed my chances of being a pilot in the military like I dreamed of, so I chose to get my A & P licenses, become an Aircraft Tech/Mech and have been turning wrenches on Gulfstream aircraft ever since. I work on the G650 currently.

I wanted to get into something that I thought would be around for awhile. So after talking with some older wiser relatives and friends I settled on power generation. I am only 24 and have a really good job I am an auxiliary operator. I took some classes and worked at some smaller plants learned all I could and now I am with a very reputible company. Turns out I really enjoy it.

I've always wanted to help old people, so I became a Viagra distributor.

I'm looking to expand my business into new markets. You and I should talk. Of course, I'm not saying that YOU need the product.....but you might be "exposed" to a few folks that do.

Of course, there would be a commission involved.:D

I didn't know what I wanted to do when I grad from high school. So I went to trade school for three years. Now I am back in college for ME, glad I didn't go to college not knowing what I wanted to do for a career.

I am going ME route because I enjoying working with mechanical structures, engineers make good money, and companies are always looking for engineers.

Business wont get you anywhere, focus on a specialty such as accounting, finance, or operations/management information systems.

Good choice. Nice general major applicable to a wide variety of fields, most notably entrepreneurship (starting your own business). As for careers ... they're overrated. I've had lots of different "careers".

Here's a book I recommend to those seeking direction...

What the heck for? When anyone who has a job becomes worthless, they become managers! How are you w/your friends? Who calls the shots for the group? If your personality doesn't put you in the lead, laying out logistics for the bar crawl, scheduling multiple dates, etc, then eh, maybe not so much on the management thing. And don't worry. One day when you become worthless, they'll make you a manager! (LOL - yeah managers - I mean you! And I'm on my way there too, so STFU!)

Screw school - go find some work now. Seriously. Pay for college and you don't know what you want? "Hi. I'll take 4 years of oh, whatever. Here's an arm and a leg, for now." Just doesn't make sense to me. College will be there. You are young and you don't have to support anyone but yourself. You can find your way w/o school. And along the way, you can learn a lot. If you find yourself in something good, who knows. OJT is the best, but if they want school in you, they may pay for it. But in the meantime, you move around, from one to another, trying different things, meeting different people.

My career is programming. Been doing it since I got a C64 as a kid. It came easy. I'm still doing it too, some 30 years later. I keep w/the flow, push my skills and avoid being sucked into management! (middle managers - that's like fat on a juicy steak - gets trimmed off and fed to the dog.) Some of the best coders I know - no college. They have the knack for it. Makes all the difference in the world. Those who don't know and go to school to learn, they're ok, but you can pick em out.

Google "what color is my parachute" and do a little reading. Find your way. Don't settle for college unless you need it, AFTER you figure out what you want.

I know - some will say "but they can never take knowledge from you." That's fine, but why waste time on it if it really doesn't matter right now. What does matter is "right now." It's prime time to sample the buffet before you decide to load up later. Once you're committed, loaded with bills, dependents, you can't easily just shift gears into a new direction. That's risky, but not impossible. I can't tell you how many people I know who got a 4 yr degree only to go back and get another in a totally different direction because, well, they really didn't want to do what their parents pushed them into, etc.

Another tip - diversify yourself as you go. If you have a job 9-5, get something on the side, make something happen. Sometimes a hobby can turn into a business. Sometimes a side gig backs up your wallet when you get laid off. Sometimes it grows and you enjoy the good life.

And whatever it is, make sure it wakes you in the morning, ready to go. :D
