i hear you dude, i got accepted to a couple different universities local and non local, and ended up going to a technical school. i worked full time on midnights and went to school all day - i have no loans paid it off when it was due, unlike alot of kids who are now paying mortgages on their school to work for 50 or 60k a year... youll figure it out man, just give it some time, youre young as am i (21), and were not supposed to be doing all this grown up shit so fast in our lives. were not SUPPOSED to own houses, have kids, worry about retirement or anything like that this young, just have fun and everything else will fall into place. trust me.

No one is being a douche-bag. He asked for thoughts, and people were honest with him. I see no reason to respond to someone with positive lies just because it might make them feel better. And is your first response to all personally received negative comments to think people who don't go along with your thoughts or opinions are jealous? But I suppose... it fits with your advice that things will "fall into place". Things don't fall into place on there own, things need to be worked at. Sure have all the fun you want, but once upon a time when you left home at 18 you were expected to be a man and stand up on your own two feet. So at 21 you may not need to think about retirement, but you need to start acting like less of a spoiled child to whom everything is handed to them and more like an adult who works to earns the things they get.

Be upfront with your dad. Is he selling his share of the business?" If so, ask him if you can buy him out. Get a business loan and do just that. At that point you will have decision power and will see just how profitable the business is. Maybe he is actually doing you a favor keeping you out. You need to make your own way in life. When someone has things handed to them, they typically do not appreciate it and squander it away.

    Make your own life.

Apparently somewhere along the lines of this thread I must have left the impression that I wanted this business handed to me. Handed? No slowly transfered just as previous generations were? Yes. You guys cant tell me if
Your father didn't train you or want to give you the family business you wouldn't be insulted.

if you want to work in the family business, make the family business yours, even if your dad cant pay you, go talk with your cousin or uncle or any where else that works there and bust your knuckles learning the business, learning the labor, learning the job. show some type of dedication to it, not just an interest in it.

You're making a lot of assumptions. If the business was previously passed down solely from father to son, why did your grandfather pass it down to both your father and uncle? Did your uncle buy into the business? Was a debt owed to your uncle? Is your father even a majority owner? If not, that may explain why your uncle, not your father, seems to be making the key decisions.

Another possibility is that your father, for reasons of his own (financial hardship at some point in his life, etc) sold a greater interest (or all) of the business to your uncle. It's not uncommon for one side of a business partnership to sell off his half of the business, with a contractual understanding that a portion of the profits will continue to go to him until death (or some other point) as part payment.

In the end, it is your father's business (or not - see above) to do with as he pleases. While disappointed, you really should not have assumed it was automatically going to be handed to you (instead of your uncle, cousins, or whomever).

my father actually owns 51% while my uncle owns 49%, i guess little story behind the passing down to my dad and my uncle...
grandparents had 4 kids 3 boys, 1 girl... all the boys Grew up working on the equipment from metal work on the lathe for the Rigs to running water lines to setting up water systems. oldest son was into wood working, decided to start a cabinet shop that does very well to this day...(handed it down to his daughter and son)... my aunt, met and married a fabricator... who started his successful business(daughter and son werent interested in the business) my dad and uncle both went to an automotive trade school in arizona, but afterwards came back to work with my grandfather.. worked with him up until his retirement.. both sons still worked there so he split it 50/50. my uncle decided he didnt want it 50/50 and wanted to be a little less, so they made it 51/49. TECHNICALLY my uncle doesnt own the property the business is run off of, this property was given to my father after my grandparents death. I never ASSUMED it was coming to me, more like HOPED the tradition would continue

Well, obviously don't know the whole story, so it would be foolish for me to continue guessing or speculating about situation. Can't really effectively comfort or soothe your disappointment either. All that's a hint for me to shut up at this point. Take care.

    This is the problem.

No. My grandfather and mother both started and successfully ran their own businesses. My career has nothing to do with either, because it's my career.

No, you're arrogant and entitled. There's a difference. Go create your own life for yourself; don't expect others to give it to you.

    John,

Your 22 years old, get out there and make your own way in life, do not expect anything to given to you. The well drilling business is either feast or famine, worked for a friend's parents growing up. It is a very hard way to make a living, especially with the economy down right now. You can go on to college, go to trade school and or military. Working with family is especially hard, you mentioned that you have a cousin that is not the best person when it comes to working, to you really want to support him with your business.

I would sit down and talk to your dad and uncle, to see what there plans are for the future. Maybe your Dad wants to sell his share for a retirement. This is just my two cents!

People are saying he hasn't been interested because he hasn't been, no one is being hateful. He's asked to go with them on jobs but he said he doesn't know how to run 95% of the equipment (that is in his own back yard and has been there his entire life) and he has pursued other work. If he'd been interested he would have been out there in high school learning how to use the equipment, he would have been hanging around the office trying to learn the business end of things, too. He also said previous generations have grown up working with the equipment, and he hasn't so why would dad and uncle think he had any interest? Cousin might only be there when he needs work, but he's still acting more interested that OP. He's there, after all.

His dad told him years ago he wasn't going any farther with the business, he assumed that was dad's code for, "Go get a degree." Well, it wasn't; he assumed wrong. He took those classes to help with the family business knowing his dad had no intention of pursuing this business any farther.

Sorry, OP, but you are upset because of your own assumptions, not anything your dad did.

I didn't read all the responses but here's my $0.02 on your original post: You have had all this equipment around your house, you have a family business and have not taken an interest until the career path you started down came to a dead end. From a business owner's standpoint, your father and uncle, it seems like you're using the family business as a fall back and that wouldn't sit well with me. Whether or not they give the company to your cousin is irrelevant at this point. If you have a serious interest in the company, show some ambition and learn the business. Don't just walk in and expect there will be a job for you just because your family owns the company.

If I were in your shoes, and I really wanted to take over the company, I'd only be disappointed in myself. It's a handed down family business, it was your job opportunity to lose. I'm not faulting you at all for trying to follow your own path and do your own thing, I actually think that's great. But if you want to come back and take over the company, you gotta start at the bottom, pay your dues and show that you can and want to run the company.

    My advice,

Leave Humbolt now. It's a cool place, but there aren't very many opportunities for new careers, unless you go to the University and major in horticulture. Travel if you can. Go back to school, somewhere in the state to keep cost down somewhat. Yes you said that it's not for you, but it exposes you to new and exciting fields.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I did ASSUME, that it would be handed down to my cousins AND I. I guess that's what I get for ASSUMING. As for the business being ran out of my backyard(I just moved into this house a couple months ago. so its not like it has ALWAYS been in my backyard) But i definately feel I should know how to run most of the equipment, again I can see now this is my fault. It's not like I haven't tried to become part of this business, so I honestly don't feel I havent tried. Anyways, thanks again for the responses.
