Wheel damage after balancing

Hi,

Took the truck into America's Tire Co. to have wheels/tires balanced and rotated. The guy who was balancing my Off Road alloys didn't do too good of a job removing the factory weight on one of my wheels, and gouged it up pretty good.


I know it is only a truck, and things like this are bound to happen, however I should be the one damaging the truck. I paid $60 for lifetime balancing, which I had refunded to me after assessing this damage. I thought about having America's Tire pay to have this wheel re-finished, but that would have ended up costing me as I doubt they would have paid for a rental for me.

Anyway, my question is I am not sure if this damage will lead to corrosion that I should be worried about? I don't think alloy will rust, but I could be wrong. What do you guys think? I can live with the gouges, but don't want my wheel to corrode on me. Maybe get some touch-up paint and fill in those areas?

 

Yes the wheels will corrode over time (years). I'd use touch up paint. My 2012 wheels are gouged as well, I'm not worrying about it since i use it as a truck off road and will scratch up the wheels on rocks/mud. I wouldn't have them refinish the wheels as they will probably do a crappy job (looks good for a while but then fades or flakes).

 

Unfortunately that damage is the norm for most tire shops.

 

I would put on your spare, drive back down there, park the tire/wheel on the counter and embarrass that "tech". It takes about a week to fix one unless there's a mobile repair shop in your area they use.

That's excessive and embarrassing.

Yea, I figured this type of damage was normal for soft alloys.

I have been going to this particular ATC for years, and they are usually good guys. I will continue to go there, so I don't really want to embarrass the tech any more, and really it is not that big of an issue, I just want to prevent any corrosion so my wheel doesn't turn to crap in a few years.

Will try cleaning it out real good, let it dry, then throw some touch up paint in there to hopefully seal it.

 

tell them to buy u a new rim if they say no toss a brick or 2 through the windows of the shop makes sure u cost them money...

 

If your that worried about it you can pick up a set of offroad wheels on the forum cheap and then have them remount/balance that combo..then you have a spare set should anything happen again.

 

Rental? For what? When Discount Tire repairs your wheels most of the time they use a mobile wheel repair company and they repair them at your home or place of business. I had Discount Tire damage 3 out of 4 my first gen. wheels on my last rotation due to a new inexperienced employee. But they owned up to it and took care of it quickly. The next day I had a mobile wheel repair company at my work and they did it in the parking lot. Looked brand new when they finished.
